This is how Istanbul’s new-age artists are retelling its old fables. My article in Counter Arts. Happy weekend reading! #storytelling #art #photography #culture #travel

In recent years I notice some art summaries or object descriptions either miss some biographical details, tell too much, or add sort of PC notes that seem to color the history or my knowledge as it was—leaving little to the imagination for me or the so-called average art/museum-goer. On the other hand, research revealing previously unknown info that “might” enhance our understanding can be helpful. For example, at an expansive Degas exhibit a few years ago the actual seedy backstage goings on of those seemingly quotidian ballet paintings was a necessary if sad commentary on those times if not our own. And so, l highly recommend this WSJ piece from a former museum guard on a better way to experience art instead of just reading all the blurbs and “tombstones” before actually looking at and experiencing the art. I suppose this could apply to other art, such as dramaturgy in theater, which now contextualzes so much background of a show as to be overwhelming or condescending depending on your threshold—unless the assumption is the average (?) theater-goer, like the average (?) museum visitor, is merely a doe-eyed tabula rasa—plumply ripe for the imprinting of old and new history from the morally superior and highly educated few.
