Does it make you a professional gatekeeper when you force supervision and therapy onto young freshers? No. Let me clarify right from the start—I am not questioning the importance of these. Yes, I am a firm believer that a therapist needs to sit on the opposite chair to understand what it means to be a client. And no, there is no other way around it. What this is about is the paradox that lies in our field. On one hand, we talk about making mental health accessible to people, but on the other hand, we do not address the hypocrisy when we expect people with barely minimum wage to keep up with these expectations. When you judge a peer for not being able to seek therapy or supervision, you are not just pulling them down but also diminishing the collaborative spirit of our profession. A 25-year-old earning 25k per month is expected to allocate a minimum of 3k for supervision (twice a month) and 3k for therapy (thrice a month). Balancing this financial strain with the need for continuous education, contributing to the family, pursuing personal dreams, and maintaining a decent lifestyle seems nearly impossible. There is no hiding the reality that it is a certain kind of financial privilege that allows one to be in this profession. So, the next time there is a sudden urge to be an advocate or desire to impose professional policing, do check your privilege before passing on those unsolicited judgments. #psychotherapy #struggles #professionalpolicing #mentalhealthadvocate #gatekeepers

Hiring Managers, HRs, considering youth specifically coming through in to your hiring processes (so school / college / university leavers). How are you finding your young candidates that are neurodiverse? Do you recognise them as such, do they share their ASD (if diagnosed or self diagnosed) with you through the process? Do you have support and experts available to refer to in general around this area, to consult, (legal and practical) to ensure you are being as inclusive, diverse and accommodating, as is appropriate, in order to hire the best person for the job? I would love to speak with Recruitment companies, Recruiters, Neurodivergent communities, Education institute leaders or senior SEN people, as well as employment law solicitors to gain a clearer picture on the current activity to address and support as well as the perceived or actual challenges in recruiting school leavers. If you would be interested in being a contributor or happy to complete a future survey on this matter, I would be very grateful to hear from you directly. #Neurodiveristy #Neurodivergence #Autism #ADHD #Dyspraxia #Dyslexia #YouthEmployment #Youngminds #AJEDI #EmbraceAbility

https://lnkd.in/gXhZ8N5e Employment profiles of autistic people: An 8-year longitudinal study Lay abstract Autistic adults experience difficulties finding and keeping employment. However, research investigating reasons that might explain this difficulty produce mixed results. Four employment groups were identified this included * a group that experienced stable unemployment, * a group that experienced stable employment, * a group that had high employment that reduced over time, and * a group whose employment increased over the 8 years. Further analysis showed that those with fewer autistic traits, younger age, male gender, higher education, later diagnosis age and no co-occurring conditions were more likely to have stable employment. People whose employment changed over time were more likely to have a higher level of education than the stable unemployment group, and those in the increasing employment group were younger age and had no co-occurring conditions. These findings help us better understand that not all autistic adults’ experiences of employment are the same, which helps focus where employment programmes and support may be most needed, for example, people who identify as women or have a co-occurring condition.

EDIT: Unfortunately, it was necessary to block a comment accusing autistic people of “being so difficult to work with” and “playing the autistic card.” Le sigh. A comprehensive examination of the barriers faced by autistic employees. Several studies are cited with their results. Excerpt: "Underemployment is another common status for working Autistic adults. There are several things that constitute underemployment (5): Involuntarily works less than full time Works full time without earning a living wage Job doesn’t utilize the person’s skillset Job provides less status because of background As we work through the data on hours and wages, you’ll see another recurring pattern: Autistic people get stuck in entry-level, low paying jobs, even with higher education degrees. In fact, many Autistic people report that “menial jobs” were the only type of job available to them. Research backs these reports up. Studies have shown that many aren’t able to find jobs that match their qualifications. Even those with higher education degrees worked low paying, entry-level, part-time jobs. One study reported that 45% of employed participants were overqualified for their jobs." #autism #autismawareness https://lnkd.in/gPbawtQM
