Industry computational biologists, I need your input. I’m trying to find examples of skills, technical or otherwise, you didn't pick up in academia that ended up being important for your first biotech/pharma compbio job. This will obviously vary widely from person to person, but still good to get a lay of the land. I’ll go first. Technical: I wish I had explicit training to assess statistical models of NGS data instead of just reading about it in publications and taking it at face value. Not technical: I also wish that I had some basic understanding of the phases of drug development - target ID, drug discovery, optimization, clinical trial basics, etc. - and the types of compbio analysis and compbio specialties that might be useful for each phase. #computationalbiology #compbio #bioinformatics #skillsgap

Most industry compbio jobs now are hybrid, anywhere from 1-4 days on site a week. But how often do/should you show up in the office? What is the happy medium for hybrid work for computational biologists? I find that pinning down an exact number of days to be on site is impossible (and often controversial). Instead, there are opportunities that I would prioritize being on site for: - Meetings for which I am presenting and for which many attendees will be on site. - Meetings with a bench scientist to discuss how best to analyze data they generated. So much of this gets lost in emails that it's better to just talk to the person directly in real time. - Lunch with my teammates. On certain days of the week most of them are on site. - The opportunity to have the entire office to myself for focused work.
