EU Culture Ministers strongly support the continuation of the Creative Europe programme.
In their open letter, 27 Culture Ministers call for continued EU support for cooperation and content creation in the cultural and creative sectors. This support must be visible, inclusive, and sustainable, with cultural diversity and artistic freedom at its core.
Initiated by Latvia and Estonia at the November 2024 Culture Council, the letter now has the backing of all EU culture ministers. It is addressed to key European Commissioners: Henna Virkkunen, Glenn Micallef, and Piotr Serafin.
Culture Action Europe fully endorses this call. It is especially important for securing Creative Europe as a standalone budget line with increased funding in the next Multiannual Financial Framework, the EU’s long-term budget for 2028-2034.

"Companies that are mindful of cultural appropriation can build trust with diverse communities and create products or campaigns that are both successful and ethical. By tackling these issues, we ensure that cultural representation is done with care, respect, and consideration."
Very interesting 3 minute read.
Last week, Simu Liu made headlines on Dragons' Den when he called out the cultural appropriation of bubble tea during a tense pitch. His powerful stand highlighted how difficult it can be to raise cultural issues, even in professional settings. Liu faced resistance—dismissal and deflection—just like many employees do when speaking up about cultural appropriation at work.

UMBERTO ECO, the Italian thinker, wrote on the idea of interconnectedness of cultures & nations. His work on SEMIOTICS, cultural studies, interpretation & communication argued that all cultures & societies are interconnected through shared symbols, narratives, & comms systems
Eco (1932-2016) was a pioneering figure in semiotics, the study of signs & symbols as elements of communicative behaviour
He said interpretation is a fundamental human activity that allows us to understand & connect with different cultures. Every text, symbol, or cultural artifact can be interpreted in various ways, leading to a multiplicity of meanings & connections
In his book "The Open Work" (1962), Eco introduced the concept of the "open work" of art, which invites multiple interpretations & engages the audience in the creation of meaning. This can be extended to cultural artifacts & practices, suggesting that cultures are open systems that constantly interact & influence each other through interpretation
Eco emphasised om cultural exchange & dialogue in promoting understanding & peace among nations. He said with dialogue & the exchange of ideas, cultures can enrich each other & build a more interconnected & harmonious world
Eco was concerned with the effects of globalisation & the role of mass media in shaping cultural interconnectedness. He analysed how media & tech facilitate the exchange of information & cultural products, leading to a more interconnected global culture
That said, he was critical of the potential HOMOGENISING effects of globalisation, & advocated preservation of cultural diversity & the critical examination of media messages
His ideas continue to inspire discussions on cultural exchange, interpretation, & the global flow of ideas
> Befittingly, sharing A CRISP VIDEO by French thinker & outgoing member of European Parliament, my friend the indefatigable localist, Hervé JUVIN, on the Strategic Neighbourhood Forum he anchored around Eco’s idea
A powerful assembly of speakers included S/Sh Ram Divedi, Charles Gavé, H.E. Philippe NGUYEN, Alain Bifani, Gregoire Akcelrod, Ram MADHAV [https://lnkd.in/dRYEB5MC] & Ms Justine UWANYUZE
They emphasise people-to-people contact as an opportunity to thrive; new ways of doing business; doing international trade in the deep spirit of bringing peace…
More power to the group, M. Juvin*
