An important news story that has received little attention in the MSM in Asia but has huge implications for Enterprise and Retail customers in the region. Four strategic under-sea cables that connect Asia to Europe have been cut when a cargo ship which came under attack in the Red Sea had dropped anchor and was abandoned. As the ship kept drifting the dropped anchor is suspected to have caused the damage to the under-sea cable systems. The repair of these cables is enormously complicated given the security situation in the region and the associated insurance and security risks of the repair ship & crew. It will probably take months to effect the repair and get these cables back in service. What is the implication for Telco's and Enterprise customers? Currently there are sufficient other cables that traverse the area connecting Europe & Asia however another couple of cable outages and things will become challenging. Telco's will need to find alternate paths that avoid this area which adds to latency for Enterprise & Retail applications. Added latency has huge implications for critical applications including timeout. My advice to CIO's and CTO's in Enterprise organizations is to check with your Telco on how connectivity would be impacted if there are further outages. #subseacables #outage #connectivity
