Workplace: discovering the science of workplace success Transition is never comfortable – something the worldwide workplace industry has discovered amply in the past few years. Eventually, a more settled state always emerges from the primordial soup of change, which is what we are seeing now. So, what lies ahead for the new workplace? We’ve undergone the ‘Great Resignation’, then the challenging RTO experience and occasionally the bitter battle about how many days people should be allowed to work from home. So, are we closer to business as usual? Do workplace leaders – from FMs to HR and real estate professionals – now have a clearer view of their way forward and of what suits their organisation and their workers best? What has irrevocably changed are at least 3 key things: 1) how we are using space in our offices 2) the expectations of our staff in terms of engagement and flexibility 3) the external pressures like ESG compliance to the wellness agenda. Today’s workers expect a superlative workplace journey, personalised to their specific needs. Technology is giving them agency to determine the way they work, from mobile space booking apps to employee portals that help their managers motivate and inspire them. Today's reality is a more scientific approach to curating the workplace experience, based on both good data and intuition, enabling the opportunities that support human needs for friendship, community, mentoring and enjoyment. Overarching all of these changes is a new approach to metrics, to measuring what success looks like in 2024 and beyond; productivity measured not just by output, but also by engagement, talent retention and personal development.
