Have you heard of "The Bridge to Nowhere?" The bridge, located in Choluteca, Honduras, was built from 1996 to 1998 and designed to withstand hurricanes. In 1998, when Hurricane Mitch hit Honduras, the bridge, did it's job and withstood the hurricane winds. Unfortunately, the roads beneath the bridge were swept away without any evidence of ever being there. And the river paved a new path for itself such that it flowed beside the bridge. The bridge was effectively useless. A lot of time, effort and money was invested in that bridge that now went nowhere. Of course, there's plenty of lessons to be learnt. Namely being that unexpected things will invariably happen. Are we building things to last, or building things to adapt? It's also worth considering the bridges we're building in our lives. Are we making great bridges that lead to nowhere? Or are we building bridges to the things that connect us to the things we care most about? Worth thinking about this year, I think.

During Atlantic hurricane season, it's crucial to have a plan in place to protect yourself and your family. Here are essential steps to follow:  Before a hurricane: Identify a safe space on lower floors but not the basement, stay informed, and prepare your emergency kit with food, water, and unique family needs.  During a hurricane: Evacuate if advised, avoid floodwaters, and listen to local authorities for updates. Remember, turn around, don’t drown!  After a hurricane: Prepare for secondary risks such as flooding, landslides and damaged buildings.

Hurricane Helene - Day 7 Our area was hit hard. Trees crushed houses, landslides destroyed cars, the flooded river washed away entire homes. I’ve spent the week working along side neighbors to ferry supplies & build temporary bridges for stranded families. In the midst of it all, a remarkable thing has happened: I’ve haven’t even looked at my To-Do List. As an action-oriented person, I rely heavily on lists of all sorts. But just because it’s on a list, doesn’t mean it should be….or that we should be focusing on it. Why is it that it’s often ONLY when facing major adversity that we re-evaluate our priorities? Most people struggle with getting caught up in activities and losing sight of what needs to be accomplished. But what if you didn’t need that wake-up call - like a hurricane or other catastrophe — to drastically re-prioritize your days? What if you clarified what was most important in your life — right here, right now — and started each day with what needed to be accomplished, rather than how many activities you could cross off your list?
