Taking action from a place of curiosity and excitement | Compost Artisan | Food Sustainability Educator | Regenerative Neighbourhoods Advocate | Sustainable Lifework Coach
'Through excitement, fear, a willingness to try, and a readiness to ‘play,’ I’ve experienced the different stages of learning something new — something that required me to step outside my comfort zone. The actual process of making fermented onion honey may have only taken 10 minutes, but internally, it marked a momentous shift. ... This journey of learning reminded me that personal growth doesn’t come from achieving goals, but from taking steps to move forward to the desired outcome, having safe spaces to try, and celebrating small wins. Every small step helped me build trust in my ability to combine ingredients and discern whether the food was still good to eat.' One of my latest article contributions to Regenerative Spiral Medium publication. Read more here:

Excited to kick off a series where I fuse my career skills with a favorite hobby - microbrewing! 🍻 For me, fermentation is a key skill in my profession, but it can be very complicated, especially when dealing with serums, medias, pH balance, Osmolarity, etc. Returning to basics with home brewing is a refreshing start. Lesson planning, akin to time management, works best in reverse. Define objectives first, and watch learning activities, assessments, and timelines seamlessly fall into place. A good learning objective is SMART: Specific, with clear endpoints. Measurable, with success easily defined. Attainable, breaking larger goals into manageable pieces. Relevant, fitting into the overall learning design. Time-Based, success defined by a deadline. SMART goals are a game-changer for career development plans too! With lesson plans in mind, my first objective is clear: Acquire all materials for a 5-gallon home brew as outlined in "How to Brew" by John J. Palmer, to be completed by January 15. This goal is specific, easily measured with a checklist, achievable within a set deadline, and sets the stage for the next objective! 📚✨ #HomeBrewing #LessonPlanning #CareerSkills #hobbies #biotechnology

If milk gets bad, it becomes yoghurt. Yoghurt is more valuable than milk. If it gets even worse, it turns to cheese. Cheese is more valuable than both yoghurt and milk. And if grape juice turns sour, it transforms into wine, which is even more expensive than grape juice. But what about mistakes? We often fear making mistakes and letting them define us. However, mistakes are experiences that can make us even more valuable as individuals. Alexander Fleming's mistake led him to invent Penicillin. If we let our mistakes get us down, we may miss out on the valuable lessons they can teach us. Remember, it's not practice that makes perfect. It's the mistakes we learn from that make us perfect. Don't be scared of mistakes, they can lead to bigger steps ahead. Keep going and keep learning.

***WARNING: this is NOT about the election*** Growth takes time. We know this. Often it takes place behind the scenes before we see the result. Even if we have a good start point, getting to the results we want can take time. It’s almost never fast and it is rarely linear. This is something my daughter is learning. 4 weeks ago we potted a small strawberry plant and every day (and I mean EVERY day) we have to check and see how the harvest is coming on…slowly. First it was more green shoots. Then it was small strawberries starting to show. Now we are getting some colour! I am sure everyone reading this will be aware of the process. I would be amazed if anyone is reading and wondering how they stumbled onto a gardening blog! So why is it so easy to grasp this for a strawberry and yet lose sight of these basics when thinking about people growth? Why is it that people development is rarely given the same care, attention and longevity of patience in the pursuit of the right ‘fruit’? Do a training session in a classroom. Just complete this elearning module. It’s a great start point, but is only the beginning. It’s like putting the plant in a pot. Most people who go on training do not have a conversation with their manager before or after about outcomes, impact, benefits or value. Many simply go from the classroom back to the day job, forgetting much of what they heard and not retaining valuable learnings. The mechanics of routine and ‘tending’ the learner aren’t in place…and so they are not fruitful. Or managers (especially those who hold the budget) get impatient. We did the ‘thing’, now where is the impact? If we want people to truly change and stay changed, then we are talking behavioural change, belief system change, cultural change…and all of those lag. If you want to see change but don’t want to keep sending people off to a classroom or onto another course then let’s chat. Let’s see if, like the strawberry, we can’t bring a little more colour and fruitfulness! #learning #training #peoplegrowth #britishstrawberries

"The Complete You: Holistic All-round Development" As a food scientist and an healthy eater, permit me to remind you that life isn’t just about food. Really? Yes, it is not about just food and food only. While food is important and we need good food to stay healthy, life has more to offer. Imagine someone who eats all day but never works or learns. They won't be very effective or successful. Just as we need to eat good food for our bodies, we also need to feed our minds and souls. This means we should always be growing and learning. We should focus on: •Personal Growth:Always trying to be a better person. •Self-Development and Skill Learning:Learning new skills and improving ourselves. •Building Good Relationships:Making friends and being kind to others. •Professional Development: Working hard and aiming for a better life. Just like eating makes your body strong, learning and growing make your mind strong. Don’t be healthy in your body but weak in your mind and abilities. To truly live well, you need to grow in all areas of your life—become a 360-degree person. #Personaldevelopmentisgood #Allrounddevelopmentiskey #Youronlinefoodscientistandproductdeveloper
