Things are the way they are until they aren't. Saw yet another post about how "...the #jobmarket is what it is. You're not going to change it." Therefore we have to do what he says if we're to have any hope of finding a job, such as being #positive all the time. One thing is for sure, the job market won't change if we don't even try to change it. If more folks get plugged into the #paralleleconomy, get plugged into #community, get to know their neighbors and #barter for what they need, we'll become less dependent on corporations and employers and more empowered individually and collectively.

Dear LinkedIn Community, Imagine receiving a connection request from someone who is currently unemployed. How do we react? Do we hesitate, wondering if their lack of current employment reflects on their value? Or do we extend a hand of support, recognizing that everyone deserves a chance? Remember Unemployment is not a reflection of someone's skills, talents, or potential. Each one of us was once starting out or faced challenges in our careers. We know what it feels like to need that one chance, that one connection that can make a difference. Let's create a LinkedIn community that values inclusivity, understanding, and support. Together, we can make a difference in someone's journey and contribute to a more compassionate professional environment. So, the next time an unemployed person sends a connection request on LinkedIn,accept their request, extend a warm welcome, and be a part of someone's journey towards new horizons. #support #colloborate #empathy

Have you noticed that for a lot of people, ‘jobless’ is one of their favourite go-to insults? Celebrities use it to shut down trolls and haters, and regular people use it to put down so-called friends, or people they don’t like. I’ve never quite understood this because being jobless does not make anyone less worthy than those with jobs. But given that we live in a capitalistic world, quotes like Chuck Palahniuk’s “You’re not your job. You’re not how much money you have in the bank,” although impressive in reel life, are moot in real life. Calling someone jobless is pure and simple ableism, and anyone who does this may be ableist. Besides, everyone knows how tough it is to find a job in today's economy. We need to be more inclusive, woke, and compassionate as a society. One of the ways we can achieve this is by being mindful of the way we use jobless in everyday language. This Labour Day, as we celebrate the hard work and dedication of workers around the world, let's respect everyone – irrespective of their employment status. After all, unemployment is a social problem, not a personal failure. #MahevashMuses #CultureAndSociety #LabourDay #MayDay #InternationalLabourDay #Ableism #Inclusivity #Compassion #Empathy #Joblessness #Unemployment #LayOffs #ToughJobMarket #SocialProblem #SocialProblems #SupportJobSeekers #RespectEveryone #YouAreNotYourJob #ConsciousBeing

In the bustling world of LinkedIn, we often scroll past posts and updates. Today, I want to highlight a crucial aspect of our network: supporting those who are currently unemployed. A simple engagement on their posts can be a game-changer. For those in our community who are openly sharing their job search journey, each 'like', 'comment', or 'share' we offer not only boosts their morale but also increases their visibility to potential employers. These small actions can open big doors for opportunities. Let’s be the wind beneath each other's wings. A community thrives when its members uplift one another, especially those who are bravely navigating the challenges of unemployment. #NetworkSupport #JobSeekerAssistance #EmploymentHelp #OpenToOpportunities #CareerHelp #EmploymentOpportunities #ProfessionalNetworking

I want to say something that bothers me about our industry (software startups, etc). My father was laid off a year ago, and although he is well-qualified and eager to work, nothing has worked out. He has had countless interviews, gotten close many times, and yet, is still unemployed. Here's the thing: my father is in his mid-60s. He is intelligent and a diligent worker. Although he's never told this, I think that the main reason he is still unemployed is his age. I worry sometimes that ageism is completely overlooked, yet it's a real problem in our industry. Remember that some things can only be learned with experience! So please help me get the word out that ageism isn't cool. #ageism #discrimination #unemployment

"Let's Build a Supportive Community on LinkedIn! When an unemployed individual sends you a connection request, consider accepting it with an open heart. Let's not judge others based on their job title, employment status, or "open to work" label. Instead, offer guidance and share your experiences to help them grow. Remember, unemployment is a temporary season, and life is full of unexpected twists and turns. The person you might reject today could be the valuable connection you need tomorrow. By lifting each other up, we rise together! Let's embrace humility and foster a supportive community on LinkedIn. #SupportEachOther #LiftEachOtherUp"

A powerful read on how job loss can impact our self-worth 💼 This article in Harvard Business Review really hit home with me. Over the past year, I've seen so many talented and driven friends go through layoffs. It's not just about the financial hardship, but the emotional toll it can take. 😔 It's so interesting how our jobs are often tied to our sense of identity and social status and losing a job can leave us feeling like we've lost value, not just as professionals, but as people. 💔 The article offers some great solutions for how we can move forward, including: Finding meaning outside of work: We all need to cultivate a sense of purpose and fulfillment that extends beyond our careers. 🌱 Definitley worth a read on your commute home! #layoffs #mentalhealth #careeradvice

Remember how difficult it was to get that first job post-Uni, or your first job that was a step on the ladder to a career you wanted? Now imagine you DON’T have a degree and it is significantly harder. A Harvard study in 2017 found that “employers believe that applicants with a college degree are more “job-ready” than those without a degree … that candidates with degrees possess more hard and soft skills than non-degreed candidates.” However they also admitted “that possessing a college degree does not guarantee that a candidate will be any better at the job than someone without a degree.” So why require one? ➡️ “Recently many leading companies have changed their mindset about requiring degrees, including Google, Netflix, Tesla, IBM, Penguin Random House, Bank of America, Hilton, and Apple. ➡️ In fact, nearly half of Apple’s U.S. workforce includes people without four-year degrees. ➡️ Even more interesting is the fact that employers agree that experience and potential are the key indicators of success. (A 2019 study found that 45% of recruiters and hiring managers say that a candidate’s potential is the most important aspect of their application.) (source: Flexjobs.com) As employers we can provide that experience - we all have to start somewhere. If you want to be part of the solution of getting our young people into great jobs and providing a pathway for their success and yours, Pollen can help. Connecting employers and outstanding young people seeking meaningful work is their mission. #socioeconomic #intersectionality #differencemakers #techcareers #femaleleaders

Really sad news. We now have 2,500 people in our community. 😢 When I say we have a community of this size after less than a year of even existing, they are often taken aback. Without sounding like some kind of chant...common questions I'm asked: "Who are they?" - erm, well, just normal people who are looking for a job and are finding the whole experience entirely shit. "How do you find them?" - TikTok, Facebook, Indeed - just the normal places you hang out when you're doom scrolling for jobs. "Where do they come from?" - Not sure, everywhere, we don't really know to be honest, they just want a job. The truth is, it's been worryingly easy to build our community. It is not ok that 2,500 people need our support. The worst part is that we have likely only reached 0.1% of people in this position. When I first started this, I thought it was all about young people, but I've had my eyes opened to the barriers for people of all ages. And yet, recruitment and retention is employers’ hardest problem to solve. This isn't sustainable. Employers, if you could please do better to give these people a fair chance and a positive experience so we can stop growing our community, that would really help us out. 🙏 #responsiblehiring #socialsustainability #recruitment #community #jobs

Great post Sophie O'Brien, making a great point about how rigid and formulaic 'our' approach to careers and career development really is, in a, so-called, modern-world, where we also talk about transferrable skills and promoting diversity. Entry level = Inexperienced. Inexperienced=Junior. Ergo, Entry-Level = Junior. You're right, it's blinkered and not sustainable. Worst of all is, it's self-perpetuating and at the 'experienced' end, I suspect it will have deleterious long-term consequences, as we're 'wasting' the collective knowledge and/or experience of a two different generations. Namely, those entering work, or starting a career and those who have relevant experience to share with them and help them grow and develop. It should be a win:win and yet it feels so far away. Keep up the good work.

don't even know what day it is, time and space have become unrecognizable as I slog through another day begging on a virtual street corner with an empty can while the rest of the world enjoys something called life. I spend hours per day on what is a called a #jobsearch bur has turned into a Neverending journey into full blown insanity with a side dish of hopelessness sprinkled with the stench of full-blown poverty. it's something to be said that I've transitioned into just learning how survive in wild as opposed to developing job skills. at this point, I'm closer to living in a tent than obtaining work that will assist me out of being homeless. it's been so long since I've done anything that resembles fun or entertaining. the only contact with anyone I have is through phone calls and interviews with prospective employers, I have no friends and have not had any since the pandemic. nor do I want any since I really don't trust anyone and all of my interactions with people have ended badly. reflecting back on those interactions, there's never been anyone who didn't sacrifice me for their own benefit and if the rest of the world treats me this way, why shouldn't I fck over everyone I come into contact with? oh yeah because I'm not a scumbag PoS who thinks he's better than the rest of the world. Everyday that goes by, I get pushed farther out on a raft farther out from the rest of the world and at this point, I'm settling into never having anything again. there's noone in this world that's is capable of helping me get what I need and I don't even know what I need anymore. #jobhunt2024 #linkedinsucks #wasteoftime #jobs
