Hospitals and federal regulators are trying to maximize the potential of AI while avoiding the very real threat that AI will perpetuate racial biases and inequities. Last December, Tradeoffs' reporting on this issue led us to Washington, D.C., where we brought together Micky Tripathi, head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), and James Ellzy, an executive at Oracle Health, one of the biggest health technology firms in the U.S, for a conversation about how to tackle this issue. AI will help address social determinants of health. The first step to improvement is awareness, and AI can help make providers aware of their patients’ gaps in social determinants of health. The next step is action, and unless gen AI can create more hours in a day, already stretched providers need help in getting patients access the resources and guidance they need. #healthcoaches are the new member of the care team to not just connect patients to solutions, but also deliver billable coaching services that close the loop and drive outcomes.
