As AI becomes increasingly prevalent in healthcare, the risks of biased algorithms are greater than ever. From bedside monitors to population health management systems, data bias threatens to misdiagnose diseases, recommend inappropriate treatments, and perpetuate health inequities that have plagued communities of color for generations. Left unchecked, data bias also threatens to erode trust in healthcare systems. It's time for healthcare providers and policymakers to recognize the gravity of these issues and take action to ensure that AI is used responsibly and equitably. To better understand this topic, check out this insightful article published by SHI International Corp.'s Digital Health Team, authored by Andrea Daugherty, CISSP, CHCIO, CDH-E and Kris Nessa. #healthcare #AI #databias #equity

Hospitals and federal regulators are trying to maximize the potential of AI while avoiding the very real threat that AI will perpetuate racial biases and inequities. Last December, Tradeoffs' reporting on this issue led us to Washington, D.C., where we brought together Micky Tripathi, head of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), and James Ellzy, an executive at Oracle Health, one of the biggest health technology firms in the U.S, for a conversation about how to tackle this issue. Here's what we learned: - Details of the first major rules from the Biden administration aimed at injecting transparency into the confusing world of health care AI. - A discussion of why it could be difficult for AI developers to give clinicians information that's actually useful in treating patients. - A candid exchange about how regulators and industry leaders recognize they must put aside ego and mistrust to work together to keep biased algorithms from harming patient care. AI will help address social determinants of health. The first step to improvement is awareness, and AI can help make providers aware of their patients’ gaps in social determinants of health. The next step is action, and unless gen AI can create more hours in a day, already stretched providers need help in getting patients access the resources and guidance they need. #healthcoaches are the new member of the care team to not just connect patients to solutions, but also deliver billable coaching services that close the loop and drive outcomes. These services ensure patients address #SDoH inequities. They also reinforce lifestyle habits that in combination with resources, lead to better #healthoutcomes. Exciting times ahead in #preventivehealthandwellness #preventivehealth #preventivehealthcare
Researchers at Mass General Brigham have found that finely tuned generative artificial intelligence models can extract social determinants of health data from doctors’ notes and the EHR system.

Inspired by Johns Hopkins' pioneering efforts, organizations in healthcare and technology should take note and consider similar strategies for ensuring health equity in the era of AI. The Center for Digital Health and Artificial Intelligence (CDHAI) sets an example with its cross-disciplinary collaboration, addressing trust, governance, and accessibility issues. Prioritizing equal outcomes, consistent algorithmic performance, and equitable resource allocation should guide other institutions in their AI integration. The emphasis on diverse stakeholder input and trustworthiness in AI development is crucial, urging organizations to broaden conversations and incentives. As Johns Hopkins garners support from key industry figures, it highlights the need for collaborative, sector-spanning efforts to shape AI with equity at the forefront. A future where digital health advancements benefit all communities should be the shared vision. Let's take cues from AIHE and collectively work towards actionable changes in the industry. #healthequity #aiinhealthcare #aigovernance

Examining AI and Health Care: What Are Implications for Equity and California’s Health Care Safety Net? As the healthcare industry is implementing AI solutions to clinical diagnostics, community and population health, hospital operations, and other areas, how do we ensure that there is DEI in AI and that these machine learning solutions are "inclusive" and avert racial bias in decision making for patient care? Will it really enhance HealthCare delivery or make health outcomes worse for certain populations of patients? Check out an important read published by the California Health Care Foundation. Thanks #CHCF for mentioning our (California Primary Care and Sutter Health) coalition to advocate for policies that will enforce the fair representation of racial and ethnic minorities in health care data. https://lnkd.in/dSNkdHqK
