In recognition of #BCConstructionMonth and National Welding Month, MCABC continues to highlight the role of mechanical contractors in the construction process. This week, we’re showcasing the vital role of welding in construction. Welders are the experts in melting and fusing materials together, such as metals or plastic polymers, using an open flame. They also interpret drawings and are well-versed in multiple welding techniques and processes. Welding requires a strong level of coordination, dexterity, and attention to detail. Today I'm sharing one of the most common and the most easily preventable failures that I have seen, and continue to see, throughout my career. #1 - improper weld preparation before coating of internal piping. #2 - no 3rd party coating inspector. So what happened? Applicator applied 1 coat at about 2 to 3 mils DFT, on what was supposed to be 2 or 3 coats at 10 to 20 mils. Now the owner has dozens of internal corrosion failures and will cost.. Big time. How to prevent? #1 - Have a specification which defines weld preparation requirements. #2 - Have a 3rd party coating inspector perform at least one or two hold points of inspection before sending pipe spools out for installation. For the incredibly small cost of a specification and an inspector, millions could have been saved.

Proper tack welding is a critical foundation for high-quality final welds in fabrication and construction. Effective tack welds securely hold components in the correct position, minimizing gaps and preventing distortion during the welding process. By maintaining precise alignment and ensuring stability, tack welds directly contribute to the strength and durability of the final weld. Poorly executed tack welds as shown here, can lead to defects, increased stress and hardness, possible begining of a crack and structural weaknesses in the finished product.
