Get to know our AutoCAD Drafter, Rayra, in our next Staff Spotlight and the invaluable, unique expertise she brings to the team!   Q: What are your main areas of expertise at AKE?    A: Most of my work is in the structural engineering department: formatting and drafting structural plans in AutoCAD for project submission; floor-level surveys that will be used in structural reports; and Matterport scanning of buildings that are helpful for the creation of as-built and repair plans. In addition, I assist with administrative work, research, and being the company interpreter as I speak three languages: Portuguese, Spanish, and English.   Q: How did you first get interested in this field?   A: I have a degree in Architecture from Brazil and when I moved to the U.S., I started working as a self-employed AutoCAD drafter. In 2014, I met Joe Zbick and provided drafting for his structural plans.   Q: What has been one of the biggest highlights of your career to date? A:  Being able to apply my field of knowledge as well as embracing more than what I learned in college. I enjoy seeing how it can be applied to solve problems. I am more aware of how important it is to think through solutions before projecting something that will be habited or used, so future accidents and malfunctions can be avoided.    Q: What’s a case you’ve worked on that you like to bring up most at dinner parties? A: We have so many interesting cases that it is hard to pick one; but this year, I conducted a Matterport scan of a condo complex that caught on fire due to a car battery failure.   Q: Being exposed to all the types of incidents that can occur, what is the biggest piece of advice everyone should know?  A: Always ensure you turn off your vehicle if you have a garage attached to your house to avoid any possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning. #staffspotlight #meettheteam #autocad #autocaddrafter

The need for precise communication in the preparation of a functional document distinguishes technical drawing from the expressive drawing of the visual arts. Artistic drawings are subjectively interpreted; their meanings are multiply determined. Technical drawings are understood to have one intended meaning.[1] A drafter, draftsperson, or draughtsman is a person who makes a drawing (technical or expressive).
