UK-based energy giant BP expects global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) to rise up to 40 percent by 2030 compared to 2022 levels. BP revealed this in its 2024 energy outlook released on Wednesday. The outlook focuses on two scenarios, current trajectory and net zero. Current trajectory is designed to capture the broad pathway along which the global energy system is currently travelling, while net zero explores how different elements of the energy system might change in order to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. BP expects LNG demand to increase “rapidly” in the near term, but the outlook post-2030 becomes increasingly dependent on the pace of the transition, especially in Europe and Asia, which rely on LNG imports to meet their incremental natural gas demand.

Thailand’s future as a major LNG growth center in Asia is in question as a draft of its 13-year Gas Plan 2024 reduces the role of gas and LNG in the country’s future power mix in favor of renewables. The draft plan forecasts that Thailand’s gas needs will drop from roughly 4.86 billion cubic feet per day (around 49 billion cubic meters) in 2024 to 4.75 Bcf/d in 2037. It also expects Thailand's overall LNG needs to grow from 1.62 Bcf/d this year to 2.04 Bcf/d in 2037, including 1.75 Bcf/d of uncontracted and/or yet-to-be-contracted volumes — 48.2% less than the 3.63 Bcf/d initially expected in the previous Gas Plan 2018. This drop is expected to be largely offset by the rapid growth of clean energy capacity, especially from solar and wind power, which are anticipated to reach 51.4 GW in 2037, up from 6 GW this year. Renewables would account for 33% of the power mix in 2037, up from 11%, while gas would slump to under 25% from the current 59%. The plan is still subject to change, with a final version expected to be released in September, but the draft signals Thailand’s doubts over relying on LNG imports.
