I don’t have a dog, does that mean I’m allowed to rant? Dog 💩 is big business. And you could be wasting your time and money buying greenwashing poo bags. Doesn’t that stink? Are you buying “biodegradable” pet waste bags that you think are “good for the planet”? Consider this before buying poo bags: 💩Any type of pet waste bag should not be composted, recycled, or left in the forest. 💩Certified compostable pet bags MUST be Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) certified AND must end up in a commercial compost facility to fully decompose. Do not leave it behind in the forest, it will not have the right temperature to decompose. Worst of all, if it’s a pink bag like this one, microplastics will be the next life for this product. If it’s not certified compostable, then it’s probably “biodegradable” which means it could biodegrade into microplastics, or take many many years to break down. Too long for our forest to take on. 💩Lastly, not all composters accept pet waste. Check your city guidelines before putting poop into the green bin. P.S. did you know that Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) stopped certifying pet waste bags in the United States because there isn’t enough composters that accept pet waste? Canadian composters like City of Calgary accept pet waste and do it very well. Does your city compost pet 💩? My last PSA is to NEVER LEAVE THIS BEHIND. This photo encapsulates one of my biggest nightmares. If you’re still confused, my colleague wrote a blog about it: https://lnkd.in/gtWTCgxC I dedicate this post to 💩 because how often to you post about it on LinkedIn? #30daycompostchallenge #30c #makecompostmainstream #makecompostsecondnature #dogs #greenwashing

The number of plastic bags washed up on UK beaches has fallen by 80% over a decade, since a mandatory fee was imposed on shoppers who opt to pick up single-use carrier bags at the checkout. According to the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) annual litter survey, volunteers found an average of one plastic bag every 100 metres of coastline surveyed last year, compared to an average of five carrier bags every 100 metres in 2014.. Large retailers in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England have been required to charge for single-use plastic bags by laws introduced in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively. The charge was increased from 5p to 10p in 2021 for England and Scotland and is 25p in Northern Ireland. Wales, where the minimum charge remains 5p, has said it will ban the bags altogether by 2026. The society’s beach cleaning effort takes place all year round, but it collects a third of its data during its Great British Beach Clean events. Last year, thousands of volunteers found that drinks-related litter had increased by 14% in Scotland and 7% in England, compared with 2022. Overall, it recorded a 1.2 % increase in plastic litter across the UK, with an average of 167 items per 100 metres. The most common five items found were plastic pieces measuring 2.5-30cm, packets such as crisp and sandwich wrappers, caps and lids, plastic string and cord, and plastic bottles and containers. More than 100 litter-picks have been organised for this year’s Great British Beach Clean, which will take place 20-29 September on shores from Bude in Cornwall to Aikerness in the Orkney Islands. #plasticpollution #environment #sustainability #climatechange #education #reduce #singleuseplastic #reuse https://lnkd.in/e7_fkKCC

New research is celebrating a huge drop in plastic bags littering beaches – the number is down 80% since 2014. Unfortunately, this isn’t the good news we all hoped for. While the evidence does prove that government policies are effective in tackling plastic pollution at the source, it also shows that they only work if the alternative isn’t, you guessed it, more plastic. Charges on single-use carrier bags have done more harm than good, with many switching to sturdier “bags for life”. In 2021, the Environmental Investigation Agency and Greenpeace said supermarkets sold 1.58 billion “bags for life” per year, the equivalent of 57 per UK household, making it really a “bag for the week”. As a heavier and more robust alternative that is still made from plastic, the “bag for life” also takes longer to degrade in landfill than its single-use predecessor. We urge the government and businesses to take bolder action to reduce plastic pollution. With reuse systems and natural alternatives to plastic at our fingertips, we should be far beyond relying on the plastic “bag for life” as a “sustainable” alternative. https://lnkd.in/enWugUKj

The number of plastic bags washed up on UK beaches has fallen by 80% over a decade, since a mandatory fee was imposed on single-use grocery bags. The fee has even increased across most of the UK, with Wales looking to ban plastic bags by 2026. The most common items found during recent beach cleanups across the UK were plastic pieces, food packaging, caps and lids, plastic string and cord, and plastic bottles and containers. Mind Your Plastic has found similar results in our Circular Economy Ambassador Program cleanups, where plastic pieces of various sizes and food packaging make the Top 5 list consistently. The right policy can make a significant impact on the amount of plastic leaking into our environment. It's important to take action now to enable more success stories like the reduction of plastic bags in the UK and eliminate single-use plastic pollution in our communities. #PlasticPollution #PlasticBagBan #PlasticPolicy #ChooseReuse #PlanetvsPlastics #PlasticReduction #Cleanups #SingleUsePlastic

The Marine Conservation Society's recent report highlights a significant 80% decrease in plastic bags on UK beaches since the introduction of mandatory charges. This reduction, observed over the past decade, reflects the success of policies that impose fees on single-use plastic bags. The MCS calls for further action, urging governments to implement more stringent measures on other single-use items and expedite the proposed deposit scheme for bottles and cans. Despite the positive trend, overall plastic litter has seen a slight increase, emphasizing the need for continued efforts in reducing waste. #PlasticPollution #MarineConservation #SustainableLiving #EcoFriendly #BeachCleanUp #WasteReduction #Sustainability

The cat litter industry is moving a more environmentally friendly, diversified and consumer friendly direction. Enhanced environmental awareness: More and more consumers are paying attention to the environmental friendliness of cat litter. Traditional bentonite cat litter (mainly made of clay) has a certain impact on the environment, as its mining and production processes may cause harm to the ecological environment. To address this issue, many companies have started developing and promoting biodegradable cat litter, such as cat litter made from corn, sawdust, grass, or other renewable materials. These materials are not only more environmentally friendly, but also typically have good odor and moisture absorption properties. Product diversification: There are more types of products available in the cat litter market, including clumped, non clumped, natural and synthetic materials. Agglomerated cat litter can quickly absorb moisture and form clumps, making it easy to clean; Non clumped cat litter may use different techniques and materials to achieve better moisture absorption and odor control. Intense market competition: With the increasing demand for cat litter quality from consumers, competition in the market is becoming increasingly fierce. Many brands are competing to launch new products to meet the needs of different consumers, including features such as different moisture absorption capabilities, odor control, comfort, and ease of cleaning. Online sales growth: With the development of e-commerce, more and more consumers are choosing to purchase cat litter online. This trend has also prompted brands to pay more attention to online promotion and user experience, while also driving the development of logistics and distribution services. The increase in the number of pets: The growth of the global pet market has driven up the demand for cat litter. As the number of pets in many households increases, the demand for cat litter also rises. This trend is particularly evident in some emerging markets, such as Asian and Latin American countries.
