🔬 Researcher Spotlight: Mac Veldhuizen Meet Mac Veldhuizen, Doctoral Candidate 7, working at University of Antwerp, and a dedicated member of the PlasmACT network! 🌟 Research Focus: Modeling the interaction of plasma species with biomolecules Mac’s project focuses on understanding the effect of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) on biological targets (e.g. proteins) using chemical modelling, as well as providing insights on the permeability of different RONS into the skin 🧪 Key Techniques: Chemical modelling (mainly non-reactive molecular dynamics but also kinetic modelling or reactive molecular dynamics). 💡 Expected Impact: Mac's research aims to create a fundamental understanding at the atomic level of the mechanisms of RONS. This should help other scientists to make choices to effectively use RONS for medicinal applications. ✨ Motivation: “I have always been drawn towards understanding life at a molecular level, and I think computational tools are the best way to unravel life in detail.” 🌐 Collaborations: Mac currently works closely with CORE, the Center for Oncological Research Antwerpen, as well as undertaking a secondment at CNRS as part of the PlasmACT consortium 🔗 Career Aspirations: Mac is currently exploring future career paths and is open to opportunities in both academia and industry. Whether continuing as a post-doctoral researcher or transitioning to an industry role, Mac is eager to apply his expertise in plasma technology to contribute to impactful advancements in science and healthcare. 📢“I like working with cold plasma applications in the PlasmACT because it combines many fields (like medicine, chemistry, biology and physics) to work a common goal of both creating a fundamental understanding of RONS but also find actual applications.” 🔗 LinkedIn: Mac Veldhuizen

Dear Research Community, I am pleased to share my recent research article published in the Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry, Springer Nature, titled "Investigating the Bifunctional Electrocatalytic Activity of Nickel Oxide/Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite for Zinc-Air Battery Applications." In this study, we report the bifunctional electrocatalytic activity of a nanocomposite composed of nickel oxide (NiO) and nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The synthesis of rGO was facilitated using the abundant phytochemicals found in the leaves of Acacia ataxacantha, which served as a green reducing agent. The nitrogen-based functionalities within the structural matrix of rGO, along with residual carbon derived from the decomposition of the leaf extracts, are expected to enhance both the electrical and ionic conductivity of the composite. This, in turn, promotes efficient ion diffusion and rapid electron transfer during key electrochemical reactions, namely the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Additionally, the impact of the loading level of the plant extract on the bifunctional electrocatalytic performance of the composite was systematically evaluated. I look forward to engaging with the community on this exciting development.

The Elizabeth R. Corson laboratory at The University of Kansas Center for Environmentally Beneficial Catalysis (CEBC) is currently accepting applications for a #postdoctoral #research project related to (photo)electrochemical conversion of small molecules. Ideal candidates will have in-depth expertise in one or more of the below areas and will be able to effectively collaborate with team members working in the other adjacent focal areas. (Photo)electrochemical conversion controlled by a potentiostat with on-line gaseous product analysis (GC) and ex situ liquid product analysis (NMR, colorometric, IC, HPLC, etc.). Advanced spectroscopic measurements (IR and Raman) during in situ electrocatalysis. Synchrotron X-ray experiments during in situ electrocatalysis. Write code (Python or similar) to analyze large data sets of spectroscopic and X-ray data. Statistically analyze data for goodness of fit to models from computational collaborators. Electrode fabrication (electro)chemical deposition, sputtering, e-beam evaporation, etc.) and characterization (SEM, XPS, XRD, AFM, UV-vis, etc.) Design (CAD) and construction of novel electrochemical reactors to enable in situ experiments. At the University of Kansas and the CEBC, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging are aspects of our culture and strategies. We encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups, noting the value that differences bring to our organization. We strive to protect the planet, promote prosperity, and enrich scholarship through diversity. NALA(STEM) AIChE Catalysis & Reaction Engineering Division NOBCChE
