The National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) was established in 1997 at the Veterans Affairs (VA) Portland Health Care System (VAPORHCS) in Portland, Oregon. The NCRAR is one of 13 research centers supported by the VA Rehabilitation Research & Development (RR&D) Service. Each of the RR&D centers focuses on a specific health condition that is of relevance to United States military Veterans. The NCRAR is the only RR&D center that focuses on auditory and vestibular research. Whereas other researchers are focusing on finding a cure for tinnitus (permanent elimination or reduction of the tinnitus sensation), the NCRAR’s focus has been on developing and testing different methods of tinnitus clinical management with the overall purpose of validating clinical methodologies for routine application. 🔔Publication Alert - ‘Hypothermia and the Global War on Terror: 18 Years of Minimal Progress’ - Published by lead author Luke Pumiglia, a PGY4 #GeneralSurgery resident at #Madigan, in the Aug 2024 edition of Military Medicine, a publication of AMSUS - The Society of Federal Health Professionals. #Hypothermia mitigation starts in the prehospital setting; however, it is often a secondary focus after other life-saving interventions. This analysis evaluates hypothermia in #combatcasualties and the relationship to resuscitation strategy with blood products. Despite nearly 20 years of combat operations, hypothermia continues to be a challenge in #militarytrauma and is associated with a high mortality rate. In this retrospective analysis, mortality was similar between hypothermic trauma patients resuscitated with #wholeblood vs component therapy, despite greater physiologic derangements on arrival in patients who received WB. As the military has the potential to conduct missions in environments where the risk of hypothermia is high, further research into hypothermia mitigation techniques and resuscitation strategies in the deployed setting is warranted. 2024 Military Health Systems Research Symposium (MHSRS) We recently returned from the MHSRS where we presented our preliminary research on gait-based traumatic brain injury (TBI) detection. Our feasibility study indicates that Holmz is not only more accurate at detecting TBIs than the current gold standards (Glasgow Coma Scale and MACE-2) but also faster. This give medics in far forward positions faster response time and less dependence on remote experts. In high risk sports, Holmz will be able provide a similar level of care, providing coaching staff with TBI assessments in marginal, typically undetectable situations such as TBIs resulting from cumulative events.
