Are antibiotics losing their effectiveness? Antibiotics have been life-saving medicines for millions of people since their discovery. They also protect people who are at high risk of infection, such as surgical patients and those with weaker immune systems. However, the misuse of antibiotics has resulted in an increase in antimicrobial resistance worldwide, and the problem is exacerbated by a lack of understanding of how these medications function. In an article published by The Conversation, Allen Cheng, Professor of Infectious Diseases, at Monash University, discusses various strategies to prevent antibiotic resistance including the need to raise awareness that many infections will get better by themselves and don’t necessarily need antibiotics, and to use the antibiotics we have more appropriately and for as short a time as possible.
