🎉 Celebrating Public Health Workforce Week 2024 This week, we join the Royal Society for Public Health in recognising the vital contributions of the public health workforce. Every role in this sector helps make our communities safer and our lives healthier. In this spirit, we'd like to highlight the journey of Jennifer Parkinson, an Environmental Health Manager at Ards and North Down Borough Council. With over 31 years in the field, Jennifer embodies the dedication that drives our profession. She believes in preventative medicine, tirelessly working to enhance homes, ensure food safety, and promote clean air. She was instrumental in bringing all councils in Northern Ireland together to offer home safety checks, demonstrating the power of collaboration in public health. Jennifer's story highlights the dedication of public health professionals who work tirelessly to protect our communities. This week, let's celebrate their contributions and explore ways to better equip them for the challenges ahead. An important question "Is Public Health still relevent in the new world?" in a session organized by EUPHA - European Public Health Association and European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies with great speakers Charlotte Marchandise Sara Cerdas Sandra Gallina Josep Figueras Iveta Nagyova @Hans Kluge Happy to see political economy being identified as an explanatory factor: political vs corporate power in democratic regimes, individual vs collective action in the current economic development model, short term financialization vs long term sustainable welfare systems My answer would therefore be double: 1. Explicitly, public health in no longer relevant until the next health crisis and so crisis management and communication are priorities 2. Implicitly, it is everywhere through the social, environmental and commercial determinants of health and so venue shopping (speaking to wider policy audiences is essential) Great initiative to begin the 2024 European Public Health Week 👏 #PublicHealth #EUPHW2024

Today Wes Streeting announced the mother of all public consultations: national discussions, regional events, and local engagement to determine the future of the NHS. There's reason to be sceptical. Wrong-headed public engagement on HS2 meant the whole project `became overwhelmed by environmental, safety and local concerns. But this is different. Clinical interventions account for only 20% of our health. The rest is our behaviours and the environment where we live. To improve our national health, we need people to step up to their responsibilities. We need businesses and the rest of the government to help keep the country healthy. That's why we need a new covenant on health and why we need to engage the public, health workers, and businesses on how to get there. It's easy to be cynical, but we desperately need this to be a success. #NHS #PublicConsultation #HealthcareDialogue

Public health is such a fascinating area of health. It's all about supporting people and communities at the individual and macro level to improve their health and quality of life. Although many doctors and other healthcare professionals specialise in public health in clinical and non-clinical roles, did you know that you don't need to have a degree in medicine or nursing or any professional qualification in order to work in public health? Public health is a fantastic career direction for arts, humanities and social sciences graduates too. As someone who has worked in frontline care with two arts degrees, I could see that I brought to my work specific kinds of empathy, creativity and innovation which helped foster inclusion and build rapport with marginalised people...which helped improve their health. Because of my foundation in the arts. The way you learn to think about people and society via studying arts and social sciences. Here at the Faculty of Health, at the The University of Sheffield we strongly encourage current students and graduates in the arts and social sciences, to consider moving into healthcare - be it studying a clinical degree such a nursing or speech and language therapy, or studying a masters in public health. Either route would increase the employment opportunities of an arts graduate and open up the possibility to advance to leadership roles in healthcare, if desired. Our public health courses can be studied on campus or remote, from across the world. Public Health, School of Medicine and Population Health: https://lnkd.in/eWyDj3PC
We’ve launched the city’s 10-year Fair and Healthy Plan which is designed to close the unfair gaps in length and quality of life across Sheffield. Greg Fell, Director of Public Health and Integrated Commissioning said ‘there are unfair gaps. People consistently tell me how important good health is to them and we know that these gaps don’t have to exist. We can do something about it.’ Through The Sheffield Joint Health and Wellbeing Board, the plan will focus on prioritising those in most need in the city. It highlights the need for ‘brave and compassionate leadership’, recognises that good health and wellbeing depends on many aspects of people’s lives and emphasises how important it is for people to know how they can be part of making the changes that they want to see. The plan calls for individuals and communities to be part of the work of the Board, by attending the meetings, raising questions, sharing lived experience, and giving feedback on what’s working and what needs to be improved. What is the Wider Public Health Workforce and why does it matter? Fitness instructors, environmental health officers, pest control workers, housing officers, cleaning and hygiene operatives, nutritionists and many more all do their bit, day in and day out, to help safeguard our health and wellbeing. But is their impact on public health recognised enough? In this blog, our Policy and Public Affairs Advisor, Indigo Starkey, takes a look at who makes up the UK’s Wider Public Health Workforce, the positive contribution they make to public health, and why with more support, they can do even more 🌱 Read the blog 👉 https://lnkd.in/e2BtsCqg

Each year, National Public Health Week, held on the first week of April, celebrates the vital contributions of public health and addresses critical issues essential for enhancing the well-being of our nation. It underscores the fact that public health extends far beyond healthcare. Today's theme, Healthy Neighborhoods, underscores the profound impact of our living environments on health. Where individuals reside, dine, work, travel, learn, and relax significantly influences their well-being. So, what defines a healthy neighborhood? It encompasses safe living spaces, infrastructure supporting physical activity, easy access to nutritious and affordable food, and areas free of pollution. When these elements are lacking, individuals within the community may face health challenges beyond their control. Building a healthy neighborhood hinges on social cohesion. Strengthening connections with neighbors and investing in communal spaces are initial steps toward fostering a thriving community. Advocating for accessible green spaces promotes leisure, exercise, and pollution reduction. Additionally, lobbying for increased access to healthy food, like farmer's markets in underserved areas, can yield long-term benefits. Moreover, governmental support for better infrastructure, including initiatives to replace aging pipes that pose health risks to low-income communities, plays a pivotal role in promoting community health. 🗳️ #NPHW #NationalPublicHealthWeek #HealthyNeighborhoods
