The Tank Storage Awards took place at a mind-blowing event hall at the Schiecenter in Rotterdam on Tuesday. The whole location of the Lloydpier and Schiehaven told me a lot about previous energy transitions and the continuous changes in supply chains. The history of the Lloydkwartier dates back to around 1900. Due to increasing industrialization and product flows, new harbors were constructed, such as the Schiehaven. The Lloydpier owes its name to the shipping company Rotterdamse Lloyd. The first electricity factory in Rotterdam, the Schiecentrale, was also given a place in the Lloydkwartier to support a flourishing industry. But in the decades after the war, activity declined in the area. Port activities moved west as bigger ships with more draft needed deeper ports and more space for loading and unloading activities. At the same time, a transition from coal to oil and gas took place, ultimately resulting in the end of the Schiecentrale as a power station. Luckily, they transformed the Schiecentrale into an impressive venue where the Tank Storage Awards took place in the Turbinehal or old turbine room.
