🌿 Remembering Dr. Kuswata Kartawinata (1936–2024) 🌿 CIFOR-ICRAF honors the life and legacy of Dr. Kuswata Kartawinata, a distinguished Indonesian botanist and ecologist who dedicated his career to understanding and protecting tropical biodiversity. Fondly known as “Pak Kus,” he played a key role in CIFOR’s work, particularly as the Director of the Bulungan Research Forest (1998–2003) in East Kalimantan. His pioneering research in forest ecology, plant taxonomy, and biodiversity conservation earned him international recognition, including Indonesia’s Karya Satya Medal. Beyond his scientific contributions, Dr. Kartawinata was a mentor and inspiration to many. His work will live on through the countless researchers, conservationists, and students he guided. 🔗: https://bit.ly/3EgYyWU Rest in peace, Pak Kus. 🕊️

Harmonizing Industry and Nature: A Glimpse into Biodiversity at Talum 🌿🏭 We have recently conducted an extensive biodiversity assessment within our industrial complex in Kidričevo. In collaboration with the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and the Institute for Biology, Ecology, and Nature Conservation at the University of Maribor, we have initiated a detailed exploration of the plant and animal species residing in our area. 🔬 This study highlights the botanical diversity at Talum, revealing approximately 300 plant species thriving on-site, representing ten percent of Slovenia’s entire floral species. Our forests, as critical green spaces, underscore the vital role of natural vegetation in industrial settings. 🌳 Furthermore, our faunal findings reflect a rich tapestry of wildlife coexisting with industrial activity. Notable discoveries include a variety of spiders, insects, amphibians, and reptiles, demonstrating that with proper management, industrial areas can serve as refuges for diverse species. 🕷️ These findings reinforce our strategic initiatives under our ESG commitments, emphasizing responsible environmental management. They also demonstrate our commitment to continuously improving our practices to support a sustainable balance between industry and the natural environment. 💼 #sustainability #biodiversity #industrialenvironment #nature #ASI #ISO14001 #ESG #aluminium #talum #talum70 #anniversary Foto: Faculty of natural sciences and mathematics

Congratulations Yuna on your doctoral thesis "Study of invasive exotic mammals in insular environments: Impacts on health and biodiversity in the West Indies. Yuna joined Caribaea Initiative during her Masters Degree on exotic reptiles. She is now dedicating herself to her doctoral project which aims to study two invasive alien mammals in the West Indies: the mongoose and the cat. The main mission of Caribaea Initiative is to protect the rich biodiversity of the Caribbean islands. One of the main ways it achieves this goal is funding young Caribbean scholars in conservation biodiversity like Yuna. The goal of Yuna s thesis is to understand their impact on Caribbean biodiversity and assess associated health risks for animals, the environment, and humans. Invasive species are one of the top 5 reasons for loss of biodiversity. www.caribaea.org #caribbean #westindies #education #science #conservationbiodiversity #invasivespecies #mammals

🐟LOOK AROUND: Progetto Life Natsalmo The LIFE Natsalmo Project, coordinated by the University of Molise with the contribution of the Molise Region and co-funded by the European Commission under the LIFE Program 2014-2020, ends in 2023. LIFE Natsalmo had as its main goals: - Ensuring the recovery and conservation of native species threatened by hybridization with allochthonous Atlantic strains in the region's river basins - Promote the adoption of participatory governance tools in order to ensure the sustainable nature of conservation measures - Establish close cooperation between project partners to import the innovative methodologies used, in similar contexts. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰…that Denmark and Thailand share a long history of collaboration in biodiversity, particularly in flora and fauna? 🌱🌷 In 1899, Danish botanist Johannes Schmidt and zoologist Ole Mortensen spent three months on Koh Chang, studying land and marine life. They collected samples for museums worldwide and published key papers on flora, corals, shellfish, insects, and the vital Thai mangrove ecosystems! 🐟🐌 Another example is from the 1960s, when the Danish ambassador to Thailand, Gunnar Seidenfaden, managed to collect more than 10,000 specimens of orchids in Thailand. This rare collection is now exhibited in the botanical garden in Copenhagen, and in 2016 it was decided that collection should be returned to Thailand to help re-establish the many rare orchids in its country of origin 🇹🇭 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲, Denmark is working closely together with Thailand in the so-called “Flora of Thailand” project, which has been going on since the 1970s. Next week, the 19th conference will be hosted by Aarhus University, attended by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. 🌊 MOOBYF: An Innovative Research Project to Monitor Biodiversity in the Indian Ocean 🌍 The European research project "Monitoring the Open-Ocean Biodiversity with Fishers" (MOOBYF) is pioneering a new approach to monitor biodiversity in pelagic ecosystems. In close collaboration with local fishers in Indonesia, the Maldives, and Mayotte, the researchers are using fish aggregating devices (FADs) to monitor the presence of pelagic fish species. With the involvement of seven research institutions from six countries, the project promotes transnational knowledge exchange aimed at the long-term preservation of marine ecosystems. Central to this effort is the integration of local fishers' traditional knowledge in a citizen science approach. The project is funded by the EU under the BiodivERsA+ programme. 🔍 Learn more about this project: https://lnkd.in/eMYCXMgs 📷 Copyright: MOOBYF #MarineBiodiversity #CitizenScience #Sustainability #IndianOcean #Research Partners: INSTITUT DE RECHERCHE POUR LE DEVELOPPEMENT(IRD) Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) University of Liège Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional RI (BRIN RI) Marine Research Centre (MRC, Malediven), Università degli Studi di Padova --- Annette Breckwoldt Sebastian Ferse

The importance of trees cannot be overstated. It is equally important to consider the right combination of tree species to sustain our ecology in the long run. Native varieties of trees, shrubs, and herbs have adapted to local climatic conditions and established the right synergy with other members of the ecosystem. They are not only homes to living beings but are the entire ecosystem. Let's prioritize planting native tree species to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of our environment.

Room to Roam is in Brussels - A visionary approach for elephants and people will be presented in the European Parliament. For the past 20 years, ifaw has worked with the University of Pretoria ’s Conservation Ecology Research Unit (CERU) to better understand elephant populations across Africa. This collaboration has led to IFAW’s Room to Roam initiative, ensuring our approach to elephant conservation is based on robust and science-informed principles that strengthen credibility and guide strategies that deliver results. The scale and ambition of the initiative demands this, as well as a fresh take on continental-scale connectivity conservation, large-scale funding, and transformational outcomes that benefit people and nature. This approach will be presented in the European Parliament today. We’ll show how investing in biodiversity can help build a greener, stronger Europe. This event is a chance to share ideas, learn from experts, and help shape Europe’s environmental future and role in the upcoming drafting of the new EU budget (MFF). Get a headstart and read about the initiative right now.
