An one-off workshop on June 26: Empowering Black Women in Tech: Navigating DEI Dynamics As a partner of European Women in Technology we (Zwarte vrouwen voor Technologie) are going to have a one-off workshop on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). Designed especially for you. Not from the books. Based on real experience. We will present our experience and perspective in the form of 3 scenarios. You can give your opinion individually and we will discuss the scenarios together. You will also work in a group to think about an innovative solution that will make real Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and make real impact on diversity in general and especially people of colour. Increasing Conscience: The Path of Black Women in Technology The voices of Black women are crucial in the rapidly changing field of technology. In order to achieve innovation and quality, we must acknowledge the special difficulties and contributions that Black women in this sector have faced. Black women continue to break ground, innovate, and lead with tenacity in spite of structural impediments. Their viewpoints are not only useful, but also essential to developing technology that benefits all. Let us pledge to: --Raising the voices of women of color in technology. --Promoting fair employment procedures. assisting networks of professionals that empower women of color. --By working together, we can create a tech sector that reflects the diversity of the globe it serves. When I say that Anne-Marie Imafidon is dropping gems for the masses... 💎 It's actually an understatement! 👏🏾 From her upbringing in Hackney to the highest echelons of education at Oxford University, she had gone on to serve as CEO, Board Member and Trustee for numerous organisations, including the Institute for the Future Work 😱 Her perspective should reveal that there is MUCH more to representation then just being able to speak up for yourself 🔊 🧱 There are indeed solid structures and gatekeepers in place that prevent entry and progression in STEM to certain demographics, especially when straddling the intersection between race, gender and disability 🧱 Our culture needs to shift, including the way that we design our education systems and the way that we approach recruiting 👩🏾🔬👨🏿🚀👷🏾♀️👨🏽🔧 Fundamentally, we need to reconsider what we value as being 'human issues' as people are continually being left behind. Unfortunately, Black woman are one of the hardest affected demographics in this regard. We should seek to normalise representation, so we don't have the allergic reaction that Anne-Marie experienced as a Black woman doing maths live on TV (incurred a horrendous backlash of racist remarks!) 🤯 - but is it really that surprising? This is a good idea for: - Inclusion (social issue) - Innovation and profit (economic issue) - Our progression as a species (global issue) Don't be fooled into thinking that we have progressed from this as a society. If you think we have then this is a call to double check your privilege. You are causing harm to folks just by not seeing these issues unfolding. If you want to explore this more I'd suggest that you go and read my sister's book "Me and White Supremacy" by Layla F. Saad 📖 Racism is alive and well, is subtle in its manifestation, and continues to affect people's lives and opportunities. Don't be from those who get left behind on this journey.
