Nurse practice standards in 1887 required each nurse to sweep, mop and dust their wards as part of their daily duties. They also were responsible for such things as retrieving scuttles of coal and filling, cleaning and trimming the wicks of kerosene lamps. Times have changed, but not the principles behind those regulations. Whether it’s a scuttle of coal or managing ventilators in an ICU, nurses have always worked to, as Florence Nightingale said, “put the patient in the best condition for nature to act upon him.” The hours are long, and the work is demanding. And so, through the efforts of individuals, nursing organizations, and lawmakers, May 6-12 has come to be known as National Nurses Week. The week ends on Nightingale’s birthday. It’s uncertain whether the no-nonsense, quintessentially practical founder of modern nursing would approve of the frivolity of a weeklong celebration. Nevertheless, it’s a chance to honor and celebrate these professionals. Of course, not all nurses – for example, CIMRO’s team of RNs – are called to the bedside. But, we can all work in the theme of this year’s National Nurses Week: “Nurses make the difference.” And on May 8, we can tip our caps to student nurses and school nurses on their special day. Finally: How long does it take a nurse to change a light bulb? Answer: 30 seconds to change it and 30 minutes to chart it.

Happy Nurses Week to all the nurses out there who make a difference in the lives of others every day. Nursing integrates the art and science of caring, and this week we recognize these efforts. The below definition captures the essence of nursing perfectly: Nursing integrates the art and science of caring and focuses on the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and human functioning; prevention of illness and injury; facilitation of healing; and alleviation of suffering through compassionate presence. Nursing is the diagnosis and treatment of human responses and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in recognition of the connection of all humanity. What is the difference between scope of practice and standards of practice? The nursing scope of practice describes the tasks that the Nurse Practice Act authorizes for nurses. (State+ Nursing Board) Practice standards are a related concept. Standards of practice describe how the tasks within the scope of practice should be performed, determined by (ANA) way to Judge the nature of care provided https://lnkd.in/g-sX5PWA

This marks a significant stride forward. It shifts the longstanding narrative in nursing from the negative portrayal of "nurses eating their young" to the more positive and empowering concept of "nurses supporting nurses." The collaboration between academia and practice to enhance the readiness of nursing graduates not only elevates the quality of care but also fosters a mutually beneficial outcome for all involved. It's truly a win-win scenario! https://lnkd.in/gPAu7hef

It's great to see there will be a review and possible update to MAGNET criteria! Nurse Wellness and Hospital Leadership are unique factors to explore! Hospital Leadership should include evidence -based onboarding, orientation, integration, and assimilation programs that value Nurses who have worked to learn leadership theories, skills, and demonstrated organizational outcomes! if it holds true that staff "leave leaders and not jobs," hopefully hospital organizations will develop robust programs that include at the very least, these four elements to help nurse leaders transition and acclimate successfully into leadership roles! The goal: Evidence -based Nurse Leadership preparedness will support Leadership Wellness AND Nurse Wellness overall!
Let's hope that the review and revisions prioritize safe staffing, bolster mental health services for nurses, ensure retention of all nurses—including those in advanced practice—put a spotlight on nursing education, and empower frontline nurses to have a voice in organizational decisions.
