Dance Data Project® Data Byte // Women-Founded U.S. Ballet and Classically Based Companies 2024 The Chicago Opera Ballet was the first American ballet company and was established in 1910. In 1929, Dorothy Alexander was the first woman to establish a ballet company when she started the Atlantic Civic Ballet, later becoming the currently active Atlanta Ballet. This achievement helped pave the way for future women-founded ballet companies. It is important to note, many of the female-founded companies were established before important laws were enacted to protect women’s rights. This includes laws like the Equal Pay Act (1963) which ensured women were paid fairly, and the Equal Opportunity in Education Act (1972) which provided equal education opportunities regardless of gender. Additionally, women weren’t granted the right to open a bank account or apply for a credit card on their own until 1974. These instances highlight the significant obstacles many women faced and overcame to establish successful ballet companies. Ballet North Texas, led by Nicolina Lawson, is transforming traditional theater experiences to embrace sensory-sensitive audiences. Founded in 2017, Lawson's journey, shaped by gender biases, inspired her to create an inclusive dance haven. 👧🧑 Not all appreciate the bright lights and loud music of traditional ballet. Recognizing this, Lawson initiated ongoing projects for a more inclusive dance environment. One project focuses on sensory-friendly performances, featuring reduced sound levels, half-lit house lights, and a relaxed atmosphere allowing audience participation. 🎭 Lawson emphasizes that these initiatives are not mere projects but an ever-evolving commitment. Her second project aims to make Ballet North Texas fully sensory accessible, exploring changes in costume embellishments and floors, for example. She's keen on adopting successful practices like show playlists and synopses for unfamiliar audiences. 🩰 The ballet world, often perceived as elitist, is breaking barriers with Ballet North Texas' sensory adaptations. 3 Business Lessons from Atlanta Ballet CoCo Chanel…. Over the weekend I went to see the Coco Chanel Ballet which was a good performance. And Nostalgic to the days I was part of a dance company from high school thru college. Chanel is notoriously known in the #beautyindustry, yet there were key details I learned during the performance. Which I had three business takeaways : 1️⃣How you start may not be how you finish. 2️⃣Be ok to go “outside the lines”, not always taking the traditional path, there is beauty and lessons along the journey. 3️⃣ Stand firm on what matters to you and business. You may be party of 1 or party of many, be consistent and do not waver. BONUS: A ballet does not have any words, the performance depicts the series of actions as part of the story. Client's Goal: The primary goal of the website is to effectively connect with parents and guardians of potential school attendees, as well as professional dancers seeking opportunities to market themselves and engage with schools and studios. The client expressed the necessity for a dynamic and engaging online presence that accurately reflects the energy and creativity of Royal Expressions. Design Elements: 1. Movement: The design of the website emphasizes movement, mirroring the grace and agility of dancers. Through strategic use of animations and custom icons depicting dancers in motion, the site captures the essence of contemporary ballet, ensuring a visually stimulating user experience. 2. Deep Contrast for Accessibility: Deep contrast was employed throughout the design to enhance readability and accessibility for all users, especially considering the diverse audience of parents, guardians, and professional dancers visiting the site. 3. Custom Icons: Custom icons featuring dancers were crafted to add a unique, personal touch to the website, reinforcing the theme of movement and artistry central to Royal Expressions. These icons serve as visual cues that guide users through the site and create a cohesive aesthetic. Unique Feature: The standout feature of the website is its dynamic nature. By focusing on capturing the essence of a dancer's movements without resorting to intrusive background music, the site achieves a balance between creativity and user experience. The incorporation of animations and custom icons ensures that visitors are immersed in the world of contemporary ballet while navigating the site seamlessly. For more contemporary artists we pulled existing bios in company, personal websites, and festival or guesting listings. Although we do not function like Wikipidea where anyone can make changes at any time we encourage artists to view their pages and should they like to make amendments (update information, add or change photos and links) send all the information as you would like it to appear and we will place it in the queue to be applied. ⁠ We issued a call to action encouraging dancers to submit the information they would like on their page.
