📰 How one company set itself up to continue thriving post SBA’s 8(a) program For Tabatha Turman, a critical aspect of the vision she has for the financial services business she began in 2007 involves being an inspiration to other small and minority- and woman-owned businesses — particularly those in the finance and accounting field. “The stigma is that most 8(a)s when they graduate, they go away. But I want to be able to motivate and inspire them to actually build their infrastructure and start bidding early,” said Turman, founder and CEO, Integrated Finance and Accounting Solutions (IFAS). In a discussion for the American Society of Military Comptrollers’ The Business of Defense podcast on Federal News Network, Turman shared insights about how she has grown IFAS, which is nearing graduation from the Small Business Administration 8(a) program, and about how she plans for its continued success. There's a storm brewing. 73% of privately held businesses in the U.S. will transition over the next ten years, representing an approximately $14 trillion wealth transfer opportunity. Will businesses be ready to exit? Will they maintain economic continuity? The U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship (SBC) convened a committee hearing on succession planning earlier this year in January and Scott Snider, President of the Exit Planning Institute was called upon for his insights and expertise across the field. I was nice to hear some high level implementation approaches on how and where to start spreading the word to business owners (ex. Small Business Association Development Centers, Veteran Owned Business Outreach Centers, Chambers of Commerce, Family Enterprise Centers, Alumni Associations, etc.). A key item that was emphasized was that the things any business owner should do as part of their exit planning efforts are the same things a business owner should be doing day to day to build a viable business. ➡️ PROPOSED RULE BY SBA – Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract Program Updates and Clarifications This proposed rule would make several changes to the Small Business Administration's (SBA or Agency) Women-Owned Small Business Federal Contract (WOSB) Program regulations, including adding definitions that are not currently included in the regulations and conforming the regulations to current statutes that have not yet been integrated. The rule would also adopt similar language to that used in SBA's other government contracting program regulations regarding the length of time that a firm that has been declined three times must wait before reapplying to the WOSB Program, and limits on outside employment.
