Windows play a vital role in shaping the character and energy efficiency of a building - but can also function as a visual and tactile delight. At Brookside, we’ve replaced the existing single glazed sash windows to locally crafted timber sash windows by Law & Lewis, skilled joiners and cabinet makers based locally in Cambridgeshire. The new windows are double glazed with antique brass ironmongery, which adds a high quality finish and a flash of golden colour to the windows. This upgrade not only enhanced the aesthetic charm of the Victorian townhouse but also significantly boosts the thermal performance - an essential step towards future-proofing the buildings energy efficiency. There are many ways to achieve this, but in this case, the insulation is built up with layers of foil faced quilt - a combination of thin build up (avoiding excessive loss of floorspace), simple to work (dry material, no curing time), and in particular low combustibility (as the building is just above the 11m threshold). Exploring different options throughout the design process is an essential part of selecting appropriate building materials, considering multiple aspects: thermal performance, visual quality; cost; fire performance; material thickness; compatibility with surrounding products and surfaces; breathability (air and moisture) ... the list can get extensive, but the results - and the views - can speak for themselves! ____________ GHA has been appointed by an education trust to renovate a substantial five-storey Victorian townhouse on Brookside in central Cambridge. Project Highlight: Davis High School, Library, and Classrooms Davis, California The convex ceiling of the Davis High School Library is the focal point of the design, but not the focal point of the acoustical environment within the space. The ceiling, in combination with the high volume of open space, makes the building high risk for echoes and reverberation. We were called on to provide acoustical details for this space, the last and only new construction component of the campus’s multi-phased renovation. We also provided acoustical details for the classroom wing of Davis High School’s new building. The required amount of sound isolation for the rooms was provided by specific wall and ceiling constructions, along with window, door, and duct/conduit penetration details. High levels of sound isolation were included in the design to help ensure that noise from the classrooms will not affect the adjacent spaces. #ProjectHighlight #AcousticDesign #Sound

How Mass Timber Can "Turn the Corner" or, avoiding putting mass timber in an (orthogonal) box Mass timber floor and roof panels are, simplistically, rectangles. We often talk about the importance of minimizing timber volume as a means of cost-optimizing the structural system. Keep panels as thin as possible Avoid unnecessarily long spans But another effective way to keep the costs of a mass timber building down are to avoid material waste. Building geometry, and how the mass timber elements fit within that geometry, play a big role here. That's not to say that every mass timber building should be a rectangular box. But if you are introducing angled sections, non-orthogonal elements, jogs, etc. know how best to frame those spaces, with a keen eye toward waste minimization and piece count. Print media is dead. That’s what they told us over a decade ago. Oh. How wrong they were. Just like vinyl, it’s made a surprising resurgence, especially with the younger audience. Something we have experienced here at Award. Why? 📖 According to a study done by Kantar, 72% of the surveyed individuals believe print magazines are the most trusted news source. 📖 Tangible materials like magazines offer a physical connection that digital media can't replicate. These printed materials can create a sense of nostalgia and a more profound sensory engagement through texture and scent. 📖 Print writers are often given more time to truly research their subject and end up with what is known as quality journalism. 📖 It actually gets edited! Where online is often written and edited by one person (this can create all sorts of issues), print media goes through a more traditional route with many eyes on it before it is released. 📖 You see, print media has established processes of editorial oversight and fact-checking. The permanence of print creates an sense of accountability because it cannot be easily altered or deleted. 📖 Print media is often seen as a canvas for art and design. The Church at Woodforest is a new build community-focused church in Montgomery, TX. It includes a multi-use facility with a worship center, gymnasium, children's space, and commons area. Its #facade features Patina and Construction high-density #fibercement panels which were chosen for their durability, aesthetic appeal, and ability to adapt to variable weather conditions. Built to stand the test of time, these panels rarely require refurbishment or material replacement, reducing the building’s overall maintenance costs.
