• Locarno Film Festival Team: 57.4% of the staff that makes the realization of the event possible are women, showcasing our commitment to equal opportunities. • Selection Committees: the two official committees that select feature and short films are gender–balanced, consisting of 4 men and 5 women. • Juries: the official juries that select the winning films of the 77th edition are composed of 8 women (including the Jury President of the Concorso Internazionale) and 9 men. → 7 out of 17 films in Concorso Internazionale were directed by women (41.2%) and 1 film is a mixed co–direction (5.9%) → 7 out of 15 films in Concorso Cineasti del Presente were directed by women (46.7%) Bravo to the Locarno Film Festival team for gathering this data and making significant strides for diversity. As someone who grew up in France, where North African minority often makes headlines for anecdotal reasons, I understand firsthand why representation matters. This year's 77th Cannes Film Festival is featuring fewer African films, marking a decline after a record year in 2023 with standout films like the Oscar-nominated "Four Daughters," "Banel & Adama," and "Omen (Augure)" captivating audiences. Despite this dip, there's reason for celebration. Movies by North African filmmakers, spanning Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, and Egyptian cinema, are prominently featured across six festival sections. These films not only mark the return of established filmmakers but also welcome newcomers, showcasing a vibrant and diverse narrative landscape. Representation in film festivals like Cannes is more than just showcasing movies; it's about amplifying voices and stories that often go unheard. When films from underrepresented communities get a platform, it challenges stereotypes, fosters understanding, and empowers individuals to see themselves in narratives that resonate with their experiences. As we celebrate the richness of North African cinema at Cannes and beyond, let's continue championing diversity and representation in the film industry. StepIn 2024 guests and topics announced! “With this year’s provocative title, ‘The Ground Is Shaking,’ we wanted to address that sense of instability perceived in all the different branches of our industry.” Marcello Paolillo, StepIn & U30 project manager, told Variety. “Whether it’s the consequence of simultaneous shocks caused by the rise of streaming platforms, a global pandemic, wars, worldwide recession and a strike that stalled the industry for months, or it’s just the anticipation of a larger upheaval due to the looming threat of A.I. still remains to be seen. But it will be something to discuss together.” A full-day event that takes place on the first day of Locarno Pro, StepIn is supposed to anticipate the tone of the market and ignite conversations that continue in the following days. “The core of the event is the closed-door roundtable session in the afternoon: a protected space where film executives can interact, share options, even disagree, but in the end tackle some of the most pressing issues we all have to contend with,” noted Paolillo. “It’s something that wouldn’t be possible in Cannes or Berlin, simply because at those markets everyone is so caught up in the day-to-day business. It would be impossible to ask film executives to take a full day off to dedicate it to the future of our business and how we can improve our working environment. Imagine if Normal People, Sorry for Your Loss, and Saltburn intersected—our film captures that essence, offering an unflinching exploration of grief’s complexities. 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗍𝗁𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺: Set in the vibrant Dutch film scene, All the Ways to Stay Awake follows Andrew, a stoic, wheelchair-bound veteran, and Niamh, a driven ballerina, as their lives intertwine through a shared tragedy. Their journey uncovers deeper truths and challenges conventional views on grief, guilt, and redemption. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗇𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻/𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺: We are dedicated to genuine, natural inclusion both on-screen and behind the scenes.
