🎬 What Can We Learn from the Top-Grossing Comedies of All Time? Comedy films are more than just good laughs; they’re cultural touchstones that bring people together across generations. Looking at the top-grossing comedies of all time, one thing becomes clear: the secret to their success is striking a balance between universal appeal and originality. From classics like Home Alone (family fun and nostalgia) to juggernauts like The Hangover (relatable chaos) or animated wonders like Minions (global storytelling), these films tapped into something deeper than just humor. They offered memorable characters, quotable lines, and stories that resonated worldwide. So, what can creatives, producers, and marketers take away from these films? 1️⃣ Know Your Audience – Successful comedies often start with understanding what makes people laugh universally, whether it’s clever dialogue or slapstick visuals. 2️⃣ Take Risks – The Hangover wasn’t a safe bet, but its bold humor and wild premise struck a chord. Risk often translates to reward when done with intention. 3️⃣ Leverage the Power of Nostalgia – Films like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle updated a beloved classic for a new audience, blending innovation with nostalgia to win big. 4️⃣ Think Globally – Animated films like Despicable Me and Shrek transcend language barriers, proving humor is universal. At Hollenbeck Film + Experience, we’re always exploring ways to infuse our projects with the kind of comedy that connects deeply and stands the test of time. Whether it’s creating relatable characters or building a narrative with a universal hook, we’re constantly learning from the industry’s best. What are your favorite comedies? And what do you think made them resonate with such a broad audience? Let’s discuss! #FilmIndustry #Comedy #Storytelling #FilmProduction #CulturalImpact

Today's post is for Comedy writers: With recent Emmy wins for shows like The Bear and Hacks, does your comedy pilot still need a strong, hooky engine? Or can you rely on compelling characters in a fascinating world? Based on a conversation I recently had with a studio executive, you still need a strong plot engine. Buyers are passing on scripts that feel "small." It's not enough to a have a Jim & Pam "will they/won't they?" carrying the series. You need something bigger, like the mystery in The Good Place or a Fish-Out-of-Water plot goal like Ted Lasso. Even though I personally loved Parks & Recreation, you're not going to be able to sell a show like that right now unless you're a famous comedian with a bunch of famous comedian friends. Until then, it's time to focus on what, specifically, in your plot story is going to hook your audience from the pilot and make them want to watch from episode to episode in order to find that answer. *** For a full breakdown on what TV executives are looking for in a pitch, check out the article I wrote laying out the formula for a TV pitch that sells. The real reason 'Roasts' work is Supply v. Demand: There is an extremely high demand for Celeb's getting their comeuppance in public and a very low supply of the same. Even lower supply point - when such comeuppance is delivered by another Celeb. This not only gets viewership + clips of this show tend to have an extremely high chance of going viral and that too globally. In the Tom Brady roast, while a large population may not know who Tom Brady is, many at least know who Kim Kardashian is which intrigues a casual fan. Highly consider finding the Roast of Donald Trump, a content piece which I feel will be watched / re-watched. #Content || #ContentMarketing || #Marcom || #Entertainment || #EntertainmentMarketing
"Roasts have given us some of the best moments in insult comedy. You take a well-known celebrity, often with a less-than-stellar public track record, and invite them to endure brutal verbal takedowns from their friends and other big names. It's everything that viewers love about celebrity culture. While Comedy Central didn't invent roasts, they certainly popularized the format for a mainstream audience. ... In Comedy Central's absence, others have stepped up to fill the roast-shaped hole in our popular culture. On May 5, 2024, Netflix broadcast the first of its kind live roast of Tom Brady. This roast followed a similar structure as Comedy Central's, even featuring roasters who appeared on CC, like Jeff Ross, Nikki Glaser, roastmaster Kevin Hart, and the greatest news anchor of all time, Ron Burgundy. Several other comics and former teammates of Brady took turns throwing their jabs at the Greatest of All Time. Surprise guests like Kim Kardashian and an awkward Ben Affleck dropped by to mixed results. While this was the first in Netflix's intended new series of roasts, it's not the first time the streaming behemoth took on the style." #comedy #liveevents #livecomedy #comedycentral #comedyroasts #roastseries #netflix #topten #netflixeffect #reboots #remakes #adaptations #streaming #streamingecosystem #friarsclub #friarsclubroasts #roastoftombrady
