Ever heard of accurate disagreement? Minnesota's Civility Caucus brings members of the state House and Senate together across the aisle. The idea is simple: By getting to know members of the “other side” as people, rather than as presumed adversaries with stereotypically held beliefs, more effective, bipartisan legislation will get done. According to Bill Doherty of Braver Angels, the key is accurate disagreement. Read about it in my latest story for Next City: https://lnkd.in/gqhjWccV

In her recent piece, Jennifer Swayne Njuguna, Esq. SHRM-SCP helps us zoom out to understand how the recent Circuit Court ruling against Fearless Fund is just one of a larger set of legal and political actions that aim to restrict rights and permanently block any attempt to remedy historic and ongoing race-based harms. A narrow focus will only further harm our ability to secure broad based rights and remedies. In her words, "It’s not that we can’t achieve victory through legal, political, and other tools, but that we have to remain vigilant, readily do the work to immobilize the inevitable recoil that mutes our victories, and actively design and demand the future we want." Read on to see the connectivity of this backlash we are witnessing and for actionable ways we can push forward: https://lnkd.in/gib89jaH #racialbacklash #equitableeconomy #impactinvesting #communityinvesting #communityfunding #economicprogress
"Hope is the foundation upon which we use these and other tools and tap into our collective imagination and will about what can be. It is also how we hold onto the yet to be realized ideals of a multi-racial democracy, an equitable economy, and recognition of our individual and collective human dignity, even when the law and other tools, at their worst, are used to design the contours of injustice. " —Jennifer Swayne Njuguna, Esq. Kids First Chicago weighed in on the Illinois Senate's recent move towards an elected Chicago School Board. Key points from yesterday’s decision include: - The Senate's approval for only 10 of the 21 board members to be elected this November, raising concerns about inclusivity and democracy in governance. - Our concerns center on the proposed election map's failure to fairly represent Black and Latine communities and the revised petition signature requirements that may favor candidates with substantial political, financial, or interest group backing. - We advocate for noncitizen voting rights, campaign finance reform, and compensation for board members to ensure a governance model that reflects and uplifts the diversity and needs of Chicago's communities. Our mission is clear: to ensure an educational governance system that is democratic, inclusive, and equitable for all Chicago families. Kids can't vote, but that doesn't mean they don't have a part to play in this election season, and in our democracy. Believing that the roots of civic engagement begin in childhood, at Highlights we want children to understand the importance of citizen involvement—so they see voting (when eligible) as a powerful way to be heard and influence decisions. In this article, kids can celebrate election day and learn how to write to their representatives about issues they care about—whether it's environmental protection, education, or something close to their heart. Teaching kids that their opinions matter is an incredible way to foster future civic leaders. Encourage the young ones in your life to start now, and remind them that their voice has power. https://lnkd.in/g_hMqyCB

Candidate, US Congress California District 1 Delegate, DNC Convention CEO, Green Retirement, Inc., Founding B Corps, WeTheChange Co-Founder, Knitter
Politics as a Force for Good? I'm running an insurgent campaign in California's first congressional district. The district is rural, solidly red, and majority white. It is possibly a fluke that a progressive candidate like me standing up for working class issues typically not strongly advocated for was able to survive the primary and move on to the general election. As a brown immigrant woman who speaks with an accent, it might seem impossible to most that I will unseat the incumbent, a native born white millionaire rice landowner. The odds are stacked against me and my campaign. But I wonder. Might a campaign that is anti-poverty and pro-family with a Care Agenda resonate with those in a district that the Democratic Party seems to have given up on? As the CEO and co-founder of Green Retirement, Inc., a founding #BCorp, and as a Lifetime Member of #SocialVentureNetwork, I seek to parlay these groups' mission of using business as a force for good into the #RoseforCongress campaign that seeks to use politics as a force for good. I'm finding that there is a group of like-minded activists living within and outside this district that my message has resonated with. We're a small but resolute group who are forging on with trust and faith that our authentic belief in using our electoral process for the benefit of people and planet will be heard and responded to. We are intent on proving what Margaret Mead said: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Does this resonate with you? If so, please lend us your support and join us. www.roseforcongress.com #RoseforCongress https://lnkd.in/gybwrdGn

COO, Director, Federal National Accounts & Market Development, Public Health & Federal Healthcare Advocate. Opinions are personal & do not reflect position of any organization that I am affiliated with.
It appears that the Texas GOP Party Platform supports honoring secessionist ‘heroes’ in the Confederate Army, who fought to tear our United States of America asunder, all because they supported human trafficking & slavery. It also appears that the Texas GOP Party Platform supports discarding the votes of the majority of Texas’ Citizens as the measure of how our elected representatives are chosen for statewide political office. ———————————————- Republican Party of Texas delegates voted Saturday on a platform that called for new laws to require the Bible to be taught in public schools and a constitutional amendment that would require statewide elected leaders to win the popular vote in a majority of Texas counties. Other proposed planks of the 50-page platform included proclamations that “abortion is not healthcare it is homicide”; that gender-transition treatment for children is “child abuse”; calls to reverse recent name changes to military bases and “publicly honor the southern heroes”; support for declaring gold and silver as legal tender; and demands that the U.S. government disclose “all pertinent information and knowledge” of UFOs. Perhaps the most consequential plank calls for a constitutional amendment to require that candidates for statewide office carry a majority of Texas’ 254 counties to win an election, a model similar to the U.S. electoral college.
