“Lies I taught in Medical School” - Lufkin’s Critique of mainstream medical teachings explained …. In this enlightening healthcare podcast episode, Robert Lufkin MD discusses the evolution of medical treatment and knowledge, drawing on a memorable quote from Sir William Osler, a pioneer in medical education. Osler imparted to his graduating medical students a critical message: "Gentlemen, I have a confession to make. 50% of what we've just taught you is wrong or incorrect, and furthermore, we don't know which half it is." This reflects the ever-changing landscape of medical research and the necessity for health professionals to remain adaptable. Dr. Lufkin stresses the significance of embracing new medical insights and the challenges of updating medical practice guidelines. He points out that many medical myths are not due to intentional misinformation but stem from outdated or incomplete scientific knowledge. He also highlights how various biases and external pressures can influence clinical decisions, potentially compromising patient safety and health outcomes. Throughout the podcast, Dr. Lufkin advocates for continuing medical education and the critical evaluation of medical protocols. He underscores the importance of a progressive approach to healthcare practices, ensuring they are informed by the latest medical science discoveries and evidence-based strategies. This discussion is crucial for anyone in the medical community, from primary care physicians to specialists and medical students, emphasizing the need for an ongoing commitment to learning and ethical practice in modern healthcare. Dr. Lufkin’s insights are invaluable in promoting a more informed and adaptable approach to patient care, aiming to enhance quality of healthcare and patient satisfaction. A Call for Professionalism and Empathy in US Clinical Experiences 💙 Recently, I’ve been engaging with numerous physicians in the US, seeking guidance and opportunities for clinical experiences. Yesterday’s conversation with a doctor prompted me to share a concerning trend in the realm of US clinical experiences that I believe needs attention. It saddens me to witness the transformation of pursuit of clinical experiences in the US into a business for some private clinics. The financial strain this places on aspiring medical professionals, coupled with instances of physicians asking students to draft their own recommendation letters, turns a valuable aspect of medical education into a mere transaction. However, I’ve come to realize that challenges persist on both ends. Instances of unprofessional behavior by physicians exist, but equally, I’ve also heard instances of students not following up on opportunities graciously provided to them. It’s crucial for both parties to maintain professionalism and empathy throughout this process. To my fellow medical students and physicians: Let’s be professional in our conduct, recognizing the shared goal of contributing to the medical community. For those extending a helping hand, your empathy can make a significant impact on someone’s journey. Remember, we were all once navigating this challenging path, and a little kindness goes a long way. In the spirit of fostering a nurturing environment, let’s be mindful of the impact our actions can have on someone’s dreams. We were all learners once, navigating the complexities of our chosen path. As we extend a hand, let it be with warmth, understanding, and the shared vision of contributing to the medical community🤝❤️

Empathy is a vital element of medical patient engagement. The attached study published through the BMC highlights the benefits of engaging with Simulated Patients (SP) early in the training programme. Increasingly, medical schools are using professional simulation providers such as Peel Roleplay. By combining the skills and experience of professional role play actors with rigorous monitoring and feedback partners such as Peel are well placed to support medics to develop and practice their soft skills, including empathy. #empathy #roleplay #simulatedpatient
