The supply of raw materials is of strategic and geopolitical importance. Europe consumes 25% of raw materials produced globally, while only producing about 3%. The Nordic region holds great potential for many of the critical and strategic raw materials that are crucial for the green and digital transition. SINTEF, represented by Lisbeth Alnæs and myself, is happy to take part in the first Nordic Forum on Raw Materials in Stockholm. We are looking forward to explore the possibilities for future collaboration in the field of raw materials. #rawmaterials; #CRMA; #sustainablemining

Council of the European Union gives its final approval on the @critical raw materials act! The #criticalrawmaterialsact introduces clear deadlines for permit procedures for EU extracting projects, allows the European Commission and member states to recognise a project as strategic, requires supply-chain risk assessments, requires member states to have national exploration plans and ensures the EU’s access to critical and strategic raw materials through ambitious benchmarks on extraction, processing, recycling and diversification of import sources.

I love eating cake, but that doesn't mean I need to eat it everyday. Similarly, phasing out PFAS from our supply chain doesn't need to be all-or-nothing, at least not right now. There can be exceptions for PFAS uses that are not currently unavoidable. But we need to focus more attention, policy, and funding on PFAS phase-out - on reducing the problem at the source rather than dealing with it once it's in our homes and the environment. From the article: "For the moment, most of the funding granted to PFAS topics relates to cleaning up pollution, and neither of the huge government-funded European Union or US programs to boost clean energy or the manufacture of semiconductor chips specify the need to find alternatives to PFASs. “We should channel more of the funding to the research that will find new solutions,” says Jonatan Kleimark, an adviser at ChemSec, a non-profit organization based in Gothenburg, Sweden, that advocates for safer chemicals." The articles also outlines the three main subclasses of PFAS: fluorosurfactants (including PFOA and PFOS), fluoropolymers, and fluorinated gasses. Use rates are highest for fluorinated gasses, followed by fluoropolymers. The PFAS we regulate most (the fluorosurfactants) are in fact the type we use least.
Could the world go PFAS-free? Proposal to ban ‘forever chemicals’ fuels debate

This is the kind of thinking needed in relation to PFAS. The scale of the challenge needs courageous decisions. https://lnkd.in/dt_kTDas
