Did you know it's Non-Binary Awareness Week? 🟡⚪🟣⚫ Each year, the week leading up to International Non-Binary People's Day is marked by Non-Binary Awareness Week. Non-binary gender identities have not been as commonly known about as other gender and sexual identities. Because of this, NB folk face a number of unique obstacles, difficulties and forms of discrimination which is why visibility for non-binary gender identities matters! As visibility grows not only does public understanding grow, but it also helps NB folk who have never had the right language to identify themselves or describe their experience of gender. The Moving Beyond the Binary guide is intended for any employer, service provider, business, or other organization in Nova Scotia. The purpose of the guide is to help you understand the needs and experiences of gender-diverse populations, what the law says about gender identity and expression, and the importance and value of fostering meaningful and authentic inclusion of two-spirit, trans, non-binary, and gender-diverse people across our province.

🌎 This past Sunday marked the observance of International Non-Binary People’s Day! July 14 is recognized around the world as an occasion to shine a light on those who identify as non-binary and celebrates the rich diversity of the community. The term “non-binary” describes someone who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary folks may identify as being both a man and a woman or as falling completely outside these categories. Many non-binary people also identify as transgender, though not all do. While today’s culture may reinforce the notion that gender exists as a strict binary, we know there is so much more to it. Non-binary people show us every day that knowing one’s self and identity is a powerful thing that no one can strip away. There’s a lot of work to be done in securing full protections and rights for our non-binary siblings, but amid that work we must take time to celebrate as well.

What do you do when you meet someone new? Here are some strategies from today's webinar "Understanding & Supporting Gender + Sexual Diversity during Pride and Year Round" presented by @TransfocusConsulting and Inclusivity. 1. Don't assume you know someone's pronouns, gender, or sexuality by their appearance. Use gender-neutral pronouns such as "they/them/theirs" as a placeholder until you find out. 2. Include your pronouns when you introduce yourself. Ask theirs, but don't press if they are hesitant. Not everyone feels they fit into defined gender categories! Much gratitude to EGBC for hosting this webinar which dug into the acronym 2SLGBTQIA+, provided some key historical and present-day context, illuminated structural and cultural challenges faced by the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, and gave some concrete strategies for approaching conversations about gender. Our team is wiser for it!

Today is the #TransgenderDayofRemembrance, and reflecting on transgender lives lost is crucial. The HRC sadly records 26 trans and gender non-conforming deaths due to hate in 2023 (many more almost certainly remain unreported) - please take a minute to honor their real names and pronouns, combatting the erasure of identities: https://shorturl.at/lDMSW Allyship matters! - Respect pronouns. Practice at home and ask someone's pronouns respectfully if unsure. Language matters beyond pronouns because inclusivity is critical. - Challenge bias. Speaking up against offensive remarks fosters a supportive environment. It's tough but vital, and finding responses you are comfortable with and can use automatically can be helpful in reacting to harmful remarks and jokes. Feel free to reach out if you need help or ideas with this; as someone who tends to avoid confrontation, I've worked to improve at speaking up and have compiled a few ways to challenge disrespectful or ignorant language. The strategy reaffirms internal commitments to providing a safe, enabling, welcoming and supportive environment that values all United Nations personnel, irrespective of gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation or sex characteristics, to advance equal opportunities, non-discrimination, zero tolerance for prohibited conduct, respect for dignity and rights and effective participation. It also reaffirms external commitments, in line with respective UN mandates, international law, norms and standards and other globally agreed commitments including the 2030 Agenda, to prevent, mitigate and address exclusion, violence, stigma and discrimination, and to advance the protection and realization of the human rights, of LGBTIQ+ persons, as part of efforts to leave no one behind.

❌ Heteronormative and cisnormative assumptions can be particularly harmful to non-binary and transgender individuals. 👉 Heteronormativity refers to the belief that heterosexuality is the default and expected sexual orientation in our society. 👉 Cisnormativity assumes that everyone is cisgender and disregards the existence of transgender individuals. 🌟 To create a safer and more inclusive workplace, it is essential to address common barriers faced by 2SLGBTQI+ individuals.
