2Africa Subsea Cable Reaches UK Shores. The 2Africa subsea cable system, the largest in the world, has successfully landed in Bude, Cornwall, under the management of Vodafone Group. This ambitious project aims to enhance global internet connectivity, particularly between Africa and the rest of the world, by providing faster and more reliable internet connections. The 2Africa cable, with a design capacity of up to 180 terabits per second (Tbps), will be the first to offer continuous capacity around the African continent, connecting 33 countries across Europe, Africa, and Asia. Once completed, the cable will span over 45,000 kilometers, enough to circle the Earth.Vodafone, as the lead partner for the UK landing, is responsible for managing the physical cable as it comes ashore, ensuring its burial on the beach, and installing it into a new, purpose-built beach manhole. The cable will then connect to terrestrial routes back to Vodafone’s existing Cable Landing Station. Vodafone will also provide onward connectivity through two diverse terrestrial infrastructure and fiber routes linking to the London area. Alcatel Submarine Networks is tasked with the manufacture and installation of the cable. [Let’s Talk Innovation 💡] Since last year, Colas has been rolling out a major innovation in the field of internet connectivity with the goal of improving coverage for all the Group’s construction sites, even those in remote locations. 💪🛰️ Our satellite solution works to overcome network and latency issues in dead spots in locations where traditional connectivity solutions would fail. Using Starlink, a high-speed internet offering, our tool maintains a high-level of performance for business applications, emails and telephone services. This innovation can also be housed in a type of suitcase so teams can more easily access the local network on mobile sites and base camps. Colas has already employed this satellite solution at four sites in France. Four new sites are in progress, including one in Poland. This technology reinforces Colas’ position as an innovator in the sector and allows the Group to better respond to the needs of its teams. We were pleased to host a cross-sector executive session at this year's Mobile World Congress #MWC24 discussing the future of communications in #rail. The rail industry across Europe is preparing for the phase out of the established, 2G-based train communication platform GSM-R which is due to be replaced by the 5G-based FRMCS standard. At the same time, the sector is searching for an approach to address ever increasing passenger connectivity needs. The call for the #Gigabit train is omnipresent.       Both developments are truly transformational in nature and come with substantial capex needs, new capability requirements, and significant impact on the wider ecosystem. Both are subject to different legislative and regulative frameworks. But at the same time, they need to be tackled in a well-coordinated way as we cannot forgo the synergy potential between them. We had great international participation from several national rail companies, mobile network operators, tower companies, telecom equipment providers as well as EU commission and a national regulator. It was deemed very valuable to facilitate the exchange of perspectives from various markets, considering the differences in national mobility systems, regulation and economic environments. Discussion topics ranged from cross-sector collaboration models, regulatory and legislative conditions through to technical solution architecture and financing. There was a common conclusion that, given the magnitude and complexity of the Gigabit train transformation, both cross-sector collaboration and international coordination are critical to crack the burning questions around the target picture and transformation path.
