Many thanks to Charles Russell Speechlys for the very kind invitation to join them for their 2nd Women in Leadership event at Harvey Nichols #Bristol, facilitated by the always insightful Claire Wigington (MBACP) The conversation covered #drivers #burnout #triggers and also the work of Claudia Goldin which was really interesting —especially as we approach International Women’s Day, a time to reflect on the progress made and the challenges that remain in achieving #genderequality in the workplace. Claudia Goldin was awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences for her groundbreaking research on women’s participation in the labour market. She became the third woman to win the prize in economics and the first to do so without sharing it with male co-recipients. She was recognised for advancing our understanding of the gender wage gap and the historical factors that have influenced women’s employment over time. Her work has provided crucial insights into why gender disparities persist despite significant progress in education and workforce participation. She demonstrated that much of the pay gap today is due to differences in work experience, career interruptions, and job choices—often linked to caregiving responsibilities rather than outright discrimination. Her research has also shown how access to higher education, legal rights, and social changes, such as the introduction of birth control, have shaped women’s economic opportunities. By winning the Nobel Prize, her work has gained even greater recognition, reinforcing its importance for policymakers, businesses, and academics striving for gender equality in the labour market. Lots to think about! That sounds fascinating! It’s always valuable to hear different perspectives and gain new insights, especially on such an important topic. Learning from others helps broaden our understanding and sparks new ideas. I’m sure we will be hearing more about this Suzanne Hall-Gibbins.
