In recent months, we’ve mapped plastic volumes across various Dutch plastic value chains, addressing a gap: a comprehensive overview that places the value chains side by side—by chain step and polymer type. 📅 Join us on November 7th at the Transition to Circularity event for the breakout session in round 2: Plastic Value Chains in Focus: Volumes per Step, Polymer Type, and Value Chain in the Netherlands. 🌿💡After exploring blended finance, regenerative agriculture, and sustainability reporting during last year's sustainability breakfasts, we've dived into another pivotal topic for transition: Scope 3 emissions and sustainable sourcing. Last week, we were pleased to welcome Frédéric Beucher, CEO of BekaertDeslee, who provided an in-depth perspective on the critical importance of mitigating Scope 3 emissions within the business framework. Frédéric's deep dive into the subject revealed the complex challenges and strategic imperatives facing today's businesses. Here's a snapshot of the challenges we've discussed: 📈The Strategic Imperative of Recycled Materials: The future may see oligopolistic control over critical recycled materials. Businesses must proactively engage with suppliers, optimize their manufacturing and recycling processes, and explore innovative business models such as product-as-a-service to ensure sustainable sourcing. 👩🔬Investment in R&D and Talent Acquisition: To navigate the complexities of sustainable sourcing, companies must significantly invest in research and development. Equally important is hiring personnel who not only understand the technical aspects of recycling but also possess a deep knowledge of the supplier ecosystem to foster collaborative innovations. ♻️Cradle-to-Cradle Design Philosophy: Emphasizing the necessity of a cradle-to-cradle approach, especially for filament-to-filament recycling, highlights the urgency to develop solutions for recycling textile waste. 🛢️Energy Efficiency in the Oil Industry: The session spotlighted the critical need for oil companies to adopt more energy-efficient processes in refining. This is particularly important as the debate continues over the carbon footprint of synthetic materials versus organic materials. 👕Product Innovation and Consumer Behavior: A significant part of reducing Scope 3 emissions lies in daring product redesigns and fostering consumer habits that support sustainable end-of-life management. This includes encouraging the acceptance of new materials and colors that are more sustainable. Sixty-five percent of the global textile market is now made of synthetics like polyester and polyurethane. This is a problem. These synthetic materials are plastics made from fossil fuels and treated with hazardous chemistries. None of this is good. Plastic is the petroleum industry’s plan B. As renewables weaken fossil fuel’s grip on the energy market, plastic demand is projected to nearly double in G20 nations by 2050. By 2050, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from plastic production and consumption are estimated at 56 gigatons, ~10-13% of the world’s remaining carbon budget. At NFW, we are not content to put a band-aid on this fundamentally limited, linear system of waste production. NFW is scaling a naturally circular, plastic-free material platform with the raw inputs that nature itself uses to create, recycle, break down, and recreate. NFW is tackling the plastic crisis with high-performance, nontoxic, biobased materials. Check out NFW's first Impact Report. We are big fans not just of the products using NFW's sustainable materials, but also their approach to their work. They are "Earth-enthusiasts" who pay attention to the impact of their operations. "This report tells the story of our work to date to wean the material economy off plastic and fossil fuels by creating (and scaling!) high-performance materials that come from nature and that can safely return to nature. This is a story about a new standard for circularity. We're trying to do things the way nature does things: every end is a new beginning."

Sustainability and circularity are essential for the future of the plastics industry and the oil value chain. However, our data shows that only about 30% of polyolefins currently on the market are recyclable. 👖 👩🔬 ∙ New project to tackle textile waste launched! Funded by the EU, the SOLSTICE project will conduct demonstrations in four EU cities and regions - Grenoble, Berlin, Prato, and Catalonia - to showcase new sorting methods for the territorial deployment of a circular textile value chain. Objectives include: ▪ Minimizing and transforming textile waste into renewable resources for the EU textile industry. ▪ Developing a sorting method for textile waste using spectroscopy analysis, which enables precise sorting based on color, composition, and fabric/garment type. ▪ Highlighting the reusability of textile polymers through chemical recycling. ▪ Developing a traceability system as a basis for the future Digital Product Passport (DPP). ▪ Rethinking the textile and plastics value chain for scalability and replicability, with a focus on establishing new governance for the circular economy. Over 42 months, SOLSTICE will work with local stakeholders to promote knowledge transfer and collaboration. The project is led by the French chemistry platform Axel'One and involves stakeholders across the supply chain, including Textile ETP, Recyc'ELit SAS, Circle Economy, Circular Berlin, TEXFOR - Confederación de la Industria Textil, TECHTERA, German Institutes of Textile and Fiber Research.
