South Africa generates 6.2 kilograms of e-waste per person each year, yet only 12% is recycled. E-waste, one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally, poses significant environmental and health risks if not managed responsibly. To address this, the South African Government has taken a crucial step towards sustainable waste management by banning e-waste from landfills. Recognising the importance of keeping e-waste out of landfills is essential. By recycling e-waste responsibly, we can protect the environment, conserve valuable resources, and reduce our carbon footprint. Let’s work together to ensure that e-waste is handled safely and sustainably. Do your part today - dispose of e-waste responsibly. #CircularEnergy #SustainableLiving #EWasteManagement #GoGreen #Recycle

🌍Waste Management in Action: 5 Tons of PET Bottles Sorted and Ready for the Future♻️ For the past 3 months, I’ve had the privilege of working hand in hand with our waste management foot soldiers—our informal waste pickers. 🙌🏾 Together, we’ve tackled some of Namibia's pressing waste management challenges, one plastic bottle at a time. In the image below, you see me at our Buy-Back Center (BBC) with over 5 tons of PET bottles we’ve cleaned, sorted, and prepped for recycling. 🚮🔄 While the work has been both exciting and challenging, it highlights the huge potential Namibia has in achieving its waste management goals under Vision 2030. 🇳🇦✨ Namibia aims to minimize waste to landfills, promote recycling, and create jobs through sustainable waste management practices. 💡 The data we gather while working with informal waste pickers isn’t just for reports; it has real potential to help inform policies, improve community health, and drive innovative recycling solutions. More needs to be done, and we’re just getting started. 💪🏾 #WasteManagement #RecyclingRevolution #PETBottles #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #NamibiaVision2030 #FootSoldiersOfWaste #KeepNamibiaClean

Join the Movement: International E-Waste Day 2024 Today marks International E-Waste Day, a global initiative to raise awareness about the responsible disposal of electronic waste. At Provident Green Club of Lagos, we recognize the urgent need to address the environmental and health impacts of e-waste. As a community, we're committed to promoting sustainable practices and reducing electronic waste. Did you know? 👉50 million metric tons of e-waste are generated globally each year. 👉Only 20% of e-waste is recycled, leaving 80% to end up in landfills or incinerators. 👉E-waste contains toxic materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium, harming human health and the environment. Take action with us:✅ 1. Recycle your electronic devices responsibly. 2. Donate working devices to those in need. 3. Support e-waste recycling initiatives. 😇It is a move I have been long waiting for, I mean it has never made sense to me using a non-biodegredable bag to collect organic household waste. However NEMA should do more, Implementing public policies on solid waste should go beyond giving notices and orders. My reservation with this approach is that such good policies fail on arrival, considering this latest notice for example; 🎯We need to see campaigns(using both traditional and modern media channels)within the given 90 days to sensitize the general public on the importance of using biodegredable bags in organic solid waste collection, types of waste and imprortance of waste segregation. 🎯Launch/partnership of NEMA, Waste Service Providers, Counties Ministry of Environment and Private players in providing the biodegredable Waste collection bags. 🎯Capacity building counties and WSPs to have collection vehicles that can be able to collect the segregate waste. 🎯Most counties are yet to construct the required material recovery facilities(MRFs). They rely on private MRFs that have limited capacities. 🎯 Most homes even the gated/affluent communities do not have Waste Separation Bins hence there is need to not only educate them but also ensure there is a strategy to inco-oparate them. 🎯 Inco-oparating zero waste strategies.(The best way to reduce waste is at it's generation point) To me sustainable waste management is more about collaboration, inclusivity and the economics around it. #SustainableSolidWasteManagement #NEMA #BiodegradbleWasteBags #MaterialRecoveryFacilities

Dear waste producers, It's the biggest price that will be paid. 🌏 To the environment. 🌲 To the land-owner. 💰 To every tax payer. 👋 To you. There's a difference between cost-effective, and cheap. If there is a significant difference in price (£40, £50 or even £60) between one waste disposal service and the next, ask some questions. ❓Do you have a waste carriers licence ❓Where will our waste be disposed of ❓Is your site permitted ❓How much of this waste will you recycle and/or recover ❗️FYI: The majority of this information is accessible to the everyone! You can search and find this, online via the environment agency. Why? Because... 🚯 60% of fly-tips involved household waste 🚯 The most common place for fly-tipping to occur was on highways (pavements and roads) 🚯 The most common size category for fly-tipping incidents in 2022/23 was equivalent to a ‘small van load’ If you produced the rubbish, it's your responsibility. You will have to pay for it again, anyhow. 💸 It costs the English economy over £1 Billion every year. Who pays?.. Everyone. Good, ethical waste disposal is NOT CHEAP. It is heavily operational, and requires extensive processing to segregate materials to be recycled and recovered. Waste disposal companies need to keep investing to further process waste in order to reduce the amount send to landfill (and this is still appropriate waste disposal, by the way). So, be aware. Be responsible. Choose wisely. Yours sincerely, Every responsible waste disposal service, everywhere. #WasteManagement #SkipHire #Recycling #GreenWaste #Sustainability #Environment #RubbishRemoval #JunkRemoval #DumpsterRental #WasteDisposal #WasteRecycling #WasteReduction #SkipBin #WasteCollection #ZeroWaste #ConstructionWaste #RenovationWaste #EcoFriendly #WasteSolutions #WasteAwareness

[Breaking News] Lagos to BAN single-use plastics, sachet water, by January 2025. If our cities will become safer, cleaner, and sustainable, it will demand that strict policies be implemented by the Ministry of Environment. When styrofoam was banned early this year, a lot of people were concerned about how we would cope. Well, months later, aren’t we doing just fine? Pet bottles (single-use plastic) and sachets contribute a large percentage of dirt on our streets and clogged waterways, leading to flooding. Think about how the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown forced us to think and devise new solutions. In the same way, this shift away from plastics will encourage the development of better, more sustainable materials that meet both environmental and economic needs. I’m looking forward to the bottling industry (Coke, Fanta, beer, and the like) reinventing their packaging. We can stick with glass bottles. We can adopt paper bag packaging. I’ve shared several videos on simple sustainable city practices. Maybe it’s time for us to rewatch the videos and begin to adopt them one after the other. If we must have a safer, healthier, and more resilient environment, we must employ sustainable waste management strategies. The transition may not be easy, but the benefits are; A cleaner city, fewer floods, and a healthier planet— it will be worth it.
