Good-ish news for consumers, not so good news for Eskom... 🤔 This is significantly lower than what I had predicted (my money was on a 20-25% increase, admittedly). Eskom needs to find creative ways to control costs while maintaining a reliable energy supply, otherwise the utility death spiral could come quicker and harder than we all anticipated. Unreliable supply could lead to more customers defecting from the grid, leaving a smaller pool of customers that contribute an increasingly diminishing portion of the utility's revenue. This scenario may help accelerate the energy transition, but the only question is whether it will net be a Just transition. Only time will tell.

The National Energy Regulator Of South Africa (Nersa) has approved the tariff applications of 178 licensed electricity distributors, including municipal and private distributors, for the 2024/25 financial year. City Power Johannesburg, as one of the applicants, will start implementing its new tariff increase, as approved by Nersa, from July 1. City Power requested an increase of 12.7%. City Power, as the City of Johannesburg’s power supplier, submitted a cost-of-supply study based on factors affecting its operations and customers, including industry inflation driven by increases in bulk purchases cost, operational costs and overall cost structure. Notably, the approved average tariff increase of 12.7% does not mean every customer will experience the same increase, with some customers due to have a slightly lower tariff increase and others higher. For example, the average increase to a typical indigent customer was limited to 6.21% as they are the most vulnerable customer category. The National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa) downward adjustment of the over 36% tariff increase Eskom had applied for to accrue savings for the consumer of about R1 billion in the next three years came as cold comfort to business, consumer and civic organisations who felt the power utility had been allowed to squeeze them out of pocket.

Still our energy affordability is a complex issue. We still have a long way to go to completely green its grid and we need strategic execution plans to manage the ‘Energy Trilemma’. **To note, the 2025 budget allocates over RM300 million to the National Energy Transition Facilitation Fund (NETR) to support decarbonization and green energy.
There will be no increase in electricity tariff for all users in Peninsular Malaysia from Jan 1 to June 30, 2025, the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation announced on Friday.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially adopted the @African Forum for Utility Regulators (AFUR) Mini-Grid Tariff Tool. This tool is set to transform cost reflective tariff determination in the mini grid project subsector. It was developed in collaboration with AFUR and key stakeholders to enhance the system. This innovative tool is set to: 1. Simplify processes by allowing developers to register multiple mini-grid sites under a single application, saving time and resources. 2. It encourages economies of scale, fostering affordable and fair energy access for consumers, which Lower End-User Tariffs 3. Integrate continent with an expected roll out across 30 African countries, the tool ensures consistency in the mini-grid subsector and facilitates cross-border operations for developers. 4. Provide an authentic regional data pool for ease of assessment and decision making thereby attracting investments. Guess what? Starting Monday, 16 December 2024, mini-grid developers in Nigeria must use this tool for permit applications at NERC. The AFUR Mini-Grid Tariff Tool is now available for download on the NERC website. Click here https://lnkd.in/d45jkCJV to access it. This milestone strengthens Nigeria's commitment to sustainable and inclusive energy solutions while setting the stage for greater regional synergy in Africa’s energy sector.
