It’s one thing for a brand to talk the talk about being eco-friendly, but it’s another thing entirely to actually do the work. IKEA isn’t just putting out greenwashing slogans—they’re backing their words with significant action. Through their “People & Planet Positive” strategy, IKEA is proving that design, functionality, and sustainability don’t have to be separate. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗽𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴: ✅ IKEA was the first major retailer to exclusively sell LED bulbs, both in-store and in their facilities. ✅ They’ve installed one million solar panels on 370 buildings and built 535 wind turbines. ✅ They’re sourcing 97.8% of their wood from sustainable sources like FSC-certified forests or recycled materials. And they're not stopping there! IKEA is aiming to be a circular business and climate positive by 2030, with over $1 billion already invested in sustainability efforts. Between 2016 and 2021, the Ingka Group, the largest IKEA franchisee, achieved an impressive 17.6% growth while also reducing its carbon footprint by 6.5%. This journey shows that a genuine commitment to sustainability can lead to both a healthier planet and thriving business. The company is on a path to becoming climate positive by 2030, focusing on three main areas: 𝐑𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐆𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐧𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐆𝐚𝐬 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬: IKEA is committed to phasing out fossil fuels and transitioning to 100% renewable energy across its value chain. With an additional €4 billion investment, they are aiming to make energy services like home solar solutions available to more customers by 2025. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲: By 2030, the company aims to use only renewable and recycled materials. As of the end of 2021, 56% of its sourced materials were renewable, and 17% were recycled. Collaborating with RetourMatras, IKEA is testing recycled polyol to potentially divert 3 million mattresses from incineration or landfill each year. This strategy benefits the planet and attracts eco-conscious customers and suppliers. Here are three key elements of IKEA's sustainability strategy, offering valuable insights for other retailers: 1. Make it easy for consumers to buy sustainable products: IKEA’s sustainable living shop, its fastest-growing business, offers products like blackout curtains and glass to-go containers, helping consumers easily incorporate sustainability into their lives. 2. Tackle difficult recycling challenges: IKEA designs products for reuse, refurbishment, or recycling, like new tableware from ceramic waste and fiberboard from recycled wood. They're also revolutionizing mattress recycling, a notoriously difficult task, aiming for 20% recycled content in foam production by 2025. 3. Create and participate in second-hand markets: IKEA’s Buy Back & Resell program had 212,000 customers in fiscal 2023. They’re also testing IKEA Preowned, a peer-to-peer marketplace for used IKEA furniture in Madrid and Oslo for buying and selling used IKEA furniture directly.
