🌍 Shedding Light on the Consequences of Informal Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) Recycling 🔄
It's time to address the overlooked global harm stemming from informal recycling practices, a direct result of our society's rampant wastefulness, particularly prevalent in certain construction designs within the healthcare industry.
Annually, a staggering 150 million pounds of single-use radiation shielding barriers are erected, only to be discarded roughly every six years as X-ray room equipment undergoes upgrades and revisions to room layouts. This perpetuates the release of lead toxins into the environment, as lead from recycled car batteries is smelted for these new room designs and new healthcare facilities.
However, there's a viable solution at hand: the adoption of reusable radiation shielding barriers. Not only would this enable policymakers to better manage lead toxins, but it could also yield significant cost savings for the healthcare system. Yet, the unfortunate reality persists that much of the lead required for radiation shielding is sourced from informal lead acid battery recycling processes where safe work environments must be implemented.
These processes exploit underdeveloped communities, where individuals, including children, dismantle lead acid car batteries with minimal safety precautions. The extracted toxic battery plates are then melted down and sold as ingots to support their livelihoods.
These harsh realities should evoke discomfort within us and ignite a drive for improvement. It's not solely the recycling industry that requires an overhaul; it's our entire approach to construction. Reusing materials, particularly those with toxic properties, should be an indisputable practice. The ARSP reusable radiation shielding barrier is the sole option available.
Organizations like Pure Earth have curated informative resources, including videos, to shed light on these pressing issues. It's imperative that we educate ourselves and take decisive action to confront these environmental and humanitarian challenges head-on. Together, let's forge a path towards a more sustainable and equitable future.

As we bring #sustainabilityweek to an end, we highlight the recyclability of Hot Dip Galvanizing. It is no secret that steel is the most recycled material- but did you know that you can recycle #zinc as well? Through the use of an MZR machine, the first stage of recycling happens at each of our facilities! Zinc oxides skimmed from the kettle are separated for the reuse of zinc!

Yesterday was #GlobalRecyclingDay and we salute the #RecyclingHeroes around the world who are contributing to a greener future. Indeed, some of our biggest recycling heroes are Kavalan customers!
However, whenever we talk about recycling, it is also essential to acknowledge the current challenges and limitations of recycling programs around the world, especially when it comes to waste from the signage industry. Sadly, a lot of toxic PVC signage still ends up in landfill or is incinerated, both of which can result in harmful chemicals leaching into groundwater and being released into the atmosphere.
To change this, #Kavalan advocates a #ReduceReuseRefuse approach, because recycling alone is not enough. We call on the global wide format print industry to #RefusePVC and go #PVCFree alongside their #Recycling commitments.
Carbon Check visited Los Angeles, California, for the #Validation of a PCX project by ByFusion Global Inc. a Delaware Corporation.
This project involves recycling post-consumer plastic waste to produce ByBlocks—building materials known for their excellent dimensional stability, water resistance, and sound and thermal properties. The impact of this project extends beyond recycling plastic waste; it provides communities and individuals with an eco-friendly alternative to traditional building materials, which have a significant environmental impact.
Our accomplished team brings extensive expertise in the plastics sector, ensuring a comprehensive approach to auditing services. Organizations involved in Plastic Credit Generation for sustainable growth can partner with us for validation and verification services for their projects.

Post and pre-consumer foam packaging (aka Styrofoam) recycling efforts are paying off BIG TIME.
Foam manufacturers, who have always recycled their production foam waste, are beginning to zero in on innovative recycled content resins.
These innovations, combined with municipal recycling grants from the Foam Recycling Coalition and the placement of the patented Foam Cycle systems at community recycling drop-off centers, are all showing their results!

Lower your carbon impact with recyclable Tennants Enviro-Plate. At the end of life, our ABS reflective plates can be ground down into pellets and given a new lease of life.
Switching to recyclable components helps stop so many old number plates going to landfill. Alongside our Enviro-Plate ABS plates, we also use recyclable PMMA acrylic, both being recyclable materials covered by specialist business recycling centres.

How can we unlock the value of plastic films and flexible plastics at scale?
We’re partnering with the Council of the Great Lakes Region (CGLR) to tackle this challenge with a secondary sortation pilot programme in Chicago. With the support of Titus MRF Services and LRS, this project aims to demonstrate the economic viability of secondary sortation by recovering flexibles and films for recycling. This in turn improves the quality and value for Material Recovery Facilities and subsequently, overall recycling rates.
The pilot will help determine the scale required to make secondary sorting cost-effective – knowledge that can then be shared with other regions to enable replication.

Last weekend, as we celebrated International Battery Day in honor of Alessandro Volta's birthday, we also reflected on the challenges facing the #ewaste management chain. From consumer behavior to proper disposal, there's still progress to be made.
Recycling batteries in our facilities remains a complex task, when batteries enter shredders they can ignite or explode if damaged.
💚📢That's why we are proud to be part of GRINNER Project, a pioneering project aimed at revolutionizing recycling.
Together, we're developing advanced sorting technology, including an innovative x-ray machine tailored for identifying and separating batteries.
This cutting-edge technology promises to streamline the recycling process, reducing environmental impact and advancing sustainability efforts.
