California, as the fifth-largest economy in the world, has a significant opportunity to lead in the creation and support of lifelong learning systems. The opportunity lies in designing and maintaining systems that serve people across their entire lifespan—from prenatal care and early childhood education through ongoing skill development in adulthood, and even learning opportunities in later stages of life. Let’s talk about: Early Learning and K-12 Education: Investing in high-quality early childhood education, universal preschool, and expanding family engagement to ensure children start school ready to succeed. Community Colleges and Higher Education: Leveraging the California Community Colleges and the UC/CSU systems to create flexible, accessible programs that cater to lifelong learners, especially for those who need to reskill or upskill. Workforce Development: Partnering with industries to create apprenticeships, internships, and continuous education programs that allow workers to adapt to new technologies and job markets. Civic and Community Engagement: Expanding community-based learning that encourages civic participation and engagement throughout one’s life. Aging and Continuing Education: Creating policies and programs that support education for aging populations, ensuring access to technology and community resources for older adults to continue learning and contributing. Let’s learn from what other states and counties are doing and start working on this now in benefit of our future! A vision of integrated schools can’t happen in isolation. ... In this episode of The Integrated Schools, hosts Andrew and Val explore the powerful vision for a racially and socioeconomically integrated public school system. ... It’s a vision where power and resources are shared equitably, humanity is valued unconditionally, and every community benefits. ... It starts with showing up and truly integrating ourselves into school communities. It’s not about coming in with a plan to "fix" things or imposing our own ideas of what a good school should be. ... Instead, it’s about listening, learning, and building relationships—being quiet and understanding the community’s needs before advocating for change. ... Desegregation begins with showing up, but integration is about how we engage once we’re there. Authentic participation is key, whether through PTA meetings, school site councils, or advocating for district policies that reflect the true needs of the community. ... Advocacy can start small, but the goal is to grow it into collective action that benefits all students. ... While learning and discussing are important steps, true change comes when we take those ideas and turn them into action. ... 🎧 Listen to the full episode https://buff.ly/3TCpHsg #IntegratedSchools #EquityInEducation #CommunityBuilding #Desegregation #InclusiveEducation #ActionForChange #JusticeInEducation #PublicSchools #Parenting

Picture a landscape where children are not bound by zip codes or economic circumstances, but instead, have access to schools that nurture their talents and aspirations. When parents have the freedom to explore a spectrum of educational options—from traditional public schools to charter schools, private institutions, and homeschooling—they become active participants in their child's educational journey, fostering a sense of ownership and investment in their academic success. Critics may argue that expanding school choice undermines the stability and viability of traditional public schools. However, Governor Doug Ducey's vision transcends the false dichotomy of choice versus public education. Rather than viewing choice as a threat, it should be regarded as a catalyst for positive transformation within our educational systems. What are your thoughts on power of choice when it comes to determining where your student may go to school? Check out our new episode airing tomorrow featuring Governor Doug Ducey to learn more! #BetterLearning #BeTheChange #RadicallyStudentCentered Doug Ducey, Kevin Stoller, A4LE-Association for Learning Environments, Second Class Foundation, Kay-Twelve, Education Leaders' Organization, Phoenix,Arizona

“This is about our children, our work, our success.” — Dr. Karla Eslinger Great to see so many PhilMO STL & Rolla Members join local educational leaders at the Delmar DivINe for the first of a series of Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education meetings to introduce Commissioner Karla Eslinger, solicit feedback on the 2023-2026 DESE Strategic Plan, and discuss the role of cross-sector partnerships. The room did not hold back — generally agreeing on the priority areas and foundational needs while: 🔹 urging bolder goal setting; 🔹 highlighting need for more seats and staffing for quality early child education and full day child care; 🔹 noting the power of language and need to reframe the narrative around public education; 🔹 emphasizing the continued need for increased and more equitable funding; 🔹 discussing workforce implications; 🔹 reflecting on the similarities and differences across rural and urban districts and suggesting value in encouraging regional approaches; 🔹 uplifting the need to overcome silos and other barriers to more collaborative, creative approaches… and more. Next up: Springfield & Kansas City #ShowMeSuccess #ImpactInspired

When I (Erin O. Crosby, Ed.D.) worked in West Dallas, residential gentrification was a daily reality with real consequences for residents. But what happens when school choice policies lead to campus gentrification in neighborhood public schools? Too often economically-constrained Black and Brown families lose an already fragile level of agency, voice, and belonging. They can lose their schools. That’s a problem we can and should change. This research brief (written by yours truly, Erin O. Crosby, Ed.D., at SMU Simmons School of Education & Human Development) tells the story of one gentrifying school navigating the consequences of choice policies. I hope contextualizing school gentrification alongside the stories of Black and Brown mothers and school leaders challenges each of us to learn more, and that the policy recommendations lead to equitable change. #schoolgentrification #radicalbelonging #schoolchoice
