Our paper is out now in Environmental Science and Policy 🎉 'The limitations and risks of land use change tools in decision-making'. We argue: 1️⃣ Despite widespread (public and private) investment in land use decision-making tools in Scotland, they are very rarely used 2️⃣ Tool reliance minimises the importance of local knowledge and peer-to-peer learning 3️⃣ In a world where LUC is increasingly reliant on data, tool creators become gatekeepers to opportunities and information (including funding) 4️⃣ More broadly, datafication of environmental governance is (in my opinion) accelerating private control of global environmental commons in Scotland, leading to imbalances between who can/will access support for LUC. This matters because across all aspects of land use change (NbS, natural capital, community benefit etc.) there is an increasing dependence on data to justify funding and evidence impact. But not everything can be quantified in this way, and not all knowledge exists in a tool. Instead, we argue that resources should be focused on the harder, but more transformative work of capacity building, support for local peer networks and education. Taking short cuts to transformational change rarely works! Key goals of environmental education include: 1. **Awareness**: Raising consciousness about environmental challenges, such as pollution, climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. 2. **Knowledge**: Providing information about ecosystems, natural resources, and how human activities impact the environment. 3. **Attitudes**: Encouraging concern for the environment and promoting positive attitudes toward sustainability and conservation. 4. **Skills**: Equipping individuals with the ability to take informed actions, such as recycling, reducing waste, conserving energy, and advocating for environmental policies. 5. **Participation**: Fostering active involvement in community efforts, policy-making, and projects that address environmental issues. Environmental education can take place in schools, universities, non-profit organizations, government programs, and through informal channels such as media campaigns and community-based initiatives. It promotes not just understanding but also a commitment to practices that benefit both people and the planet.

🌿I am sharing relevant parts of my master's thesis that explore the importance of equity incentive-based conservation policy🌿. 🌲 Despite the benefits of incentive-based conservation policies, significant challenges persist. Issues like long-term financial sustainability, reinforcement of existing power structures, economic disparities, and stakeholder conflicts complicate these initiatives. Conservation decisions often involve competing social, economic, and ecological goals, leading to complex trade-offs and potential stakeholder conflicts. 🌲 Recognizing the critical importance of equity in conservation decision-making, my master’s thesis seeks to bridge the gap in understanding and addressing equity issues by focusing on both procedural and distributional aspects.
