As we honor April 25th, the day of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, it's crucial to contemplate the freedoms gained and the contemporary threats to these liberties. April 25th, 1974, marked the triumph of democracy over dictatorship and the establishment of fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, assembly, and political participation. Yet, today, these freedoms face new challenges. Authoritarianism, erosion of democratic norms, and the spread of disinformation threaten the very foundation of our liberties. It's imperative to remain vigilant in defending democratic institutions and promoting critical thinking to counter these threats. In this ongoing struggle for liberty, every individual and organization plays a crucial role. As an employee of Issuu, I'm grateful for its role in fostering freedom of thought and expression among its workers. Just as April 25th signifies liberation, Issuu empowers individuals to share their ideas with the world, embodying the spirit of democracy in action. To truly appreciate the British perspective on Independence Day, we must first delve into the historical context. The Fourth of July marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, a defining moment in American history. For the British, it signifies the loss of one of their colonies and the birth of a new nation. While this event holds great historical significance for Americans, many Brits also acknowledge and respect it. It serves as a reminder of the shared history between the two nations and the importance of freedom and self-determination. Remembering Václav Havel on the 12th anniversary of his passing, and his solidarity with free Cubans Václav Havel October 5, 1936 - December 18, 2011 Václav Havel passed away twelve years ago this week, on December 18, 2011, and his nonviolent resistance and dedication to truth in successfully resisting totalitarian rule in Czechoslovakia remain powerful legacies and examples that are relevant today. In 2002, President Vaclav Havel addressed the Cuban people and offered words that should be heeded now and in the future: "Our world, as a whole, is not in the best of shape and the direction it is headed in may well be quite ambivalent. But this does not mean that we are permitted to give up on free and cultivated thinking and to replace it with a set of utopian clichés. That would not make the world a better place, it would only make it worse. On the contrary, it means that we must do more for our own freedom, and that of others." Frank Calzon in his OpEd, "Remembering a champion of freedom" published in the Miami Herald on Sept 13, 2012 wrote about how Havel championed the cause of Cuban freedom.
