#COVID killed off any lingering regard I had for #technocracy & automatically deferring to supposed “experts” because they have pieces of paper on the wall & say clever sounding things.   Conversely, the older I get, the more I revere tangible expertise: The chef who effortlessly whips up an amazing meal from memory. The mechanic doing a 6-hour job in 3 hours. The #Lawyer laying an exquisite ambush for a witness in a deposition. The #Police officer using their presence to deescalate a situation without force.   I regularly rant about the US Army & United States Army Reserve producing quite clever & educated technocratic #Managers so busy measuring everything with #Metrics, they never bother considering if they’re measuring anything meaningful.   Yet for all my disparagement of technocracy, I’m also a practitioner of it. Particularly with #RiskManagement when using #Explosives & #Ordnance. The more I use explosives, the more I have come to respect its hazards. Even Tannerite requires great caution.   I loathe both the word & concept of “safety”. A “#Safety” mindset offers comforting delusions that risks have been eliminated, which can lead to compliancy. There’s no way to make the use of #HighExplosives safe. Unlike Gary’s promise to Lisa on top of Team America’s secret HQ in Mt. Rushmore, there’s no realistic way to “promise me you’ll never die” if you’re blowing things up.   With explosives, you can only manage the risk down to what can only be a subjectively tolerable level. But doing so requires a perpetual process of risk management.   The exact same actions can be done in a reckless or prudent manner. With explosives, distance is your friend. What’s mindbogglingly dangerous with 25m stand-off, might be done with an acceptable level of risk with 300m stand-off. Wearing #BodyArmor won’t save you from a large explosion, but it might save you from a smaller one or things falling from the sky.   When dealing with incendiaries such as Molotov Cocktails or thermite grenades, wearing FR clothing won’t allow you to talk through fire unscathed or juggle burning thermite. But it will buy you precious seconds in a flashover or melting to your skin if you end up doing a Richard Pryor imitation.   Ultimately there’s a median between scared & complacent. You want to be confident in your plan & your abilities, while also extremely cognizant of all the ways both your plan & your abilities can fail; and what your response to those failures will be.   A proper risk management program should be both “left of the (literal) BANG” in what will avoid an incident & to the right of the BANG in how you will respond to an incident.   But no matter how smart, cautious & technically proficient you are; there’s always going to be a more than zero chance that you’re going to end up dead or grievously injured. Instead of that resulting in fear, that should be what keeps your mind engaged & critically thinking about how you can further reduce risk.   Darwin is out there.

Are EP Agents Better Than #Protection (or #Security) Officers? Full Disclosure: I'm a dyed in the wool, embedded at establishments and event #protectionofficer or #securityofficer who loves creating safety with his mostly friendly everyday VIPs, Working Class folks secured to and from work and at play, as opposed to mostly snobby high networth and ultra high networth individuals. I've also had this potentially controversial question in mind for quite some time. My nuanced answer to the question is carefully phrased so as not to offend agents whom I greatly respect, is that executive protectors are better at marketing superior skills as being synonymous with their field, something excellent everyday protectors at sites, cash in transit, events, etc need to do ASAP. Everyday protectors largely don't showcase what makes them special, which they should do, and labor against entrenched negative opinions. Kudos as always to EP for becoming the face of the protection profession.
