May 4 | Saturday | 6:30 PM Echoes of AI RSVP: https://shorturl.at/CLNS8 On the surface, an Indian doctor, a British poet, an UberEats courier in Pittsburgh, and a Chinese activist in exile have nothing in common. But they are in fact linked by a profound common experience―unexpected encounters with artificial intelligence. In her debut book Code Dependent, shortlisted for the inaugural Women’s Prize for Non-fiction 2024, Madhumita Murgia shows how automated systems are reshaping our lives all over the world, from technology that marks children as future criminals, to an app that is helping to offer medical diagnoses to a remote tribal community. By highlighting the voices of ordinary people in places far removed from the cozy enclave of Silicon Valley, Madhumita explores the impact of this often-exploitative technology on individuals, communities, and our wider society. Vidushi Marda, a lawyer and researcher, specialises in examining the socio-legal ramifications of data-driven technologies. Her research centers on technology regulation, asymmetric power dynamics, and fundamental rights. Through her endeavors, she collaborates with governments, corporations, and technical communities to promote social justice. Together, they will discuss and unpack how AI can strip away our collective and individual sense of agency, and shatter our illusion of free will. AI has already infiltrated our day-to-day, through language-generating chatbots like ChatGPT and social media. But it’s also affecting us in more insidious ways. It touches everything from our interpersonal relationships, to our kids’ education, work, finances, public services, and even our human rights. It is already changing what it means to be human, in ways large and small, and Madhumita and Vidushi reveal what could happen if we fail to reclaim our humanity. #AI #StoriesonAI #ArtificialIntelligence #Techfutures

The Pulse on AI - CSPARNELL Lonely Hearts and Big Bucks: The Billion-Dollar Future of AI-Driven Companionship With AI's vast capabilities expanding, its latest venture seems straight out of a science fiction novel—AI-generated virtual girlfriends. These digital entities, cultivated to provide companionship through complex algorithms, are not just fanciful concepts but real investments attracting significant funds. A fascinating instance involves a tech executive, Greg Isenberg, who met a man spending a staggering $10,000 monthly on these virtual companions. These platforms, such as Candy.ai and Kupid.ai, provide a customizable experience that ranges from platonic interactions to more intimate connections. The importance of this development hinges on its potential market value and psychological impacts. Isenberg projects that the AI companionship industry could mirror the financial success of major dating apps like Match Group, turning into a billion-dollar enterprise. This trend could reshape societal norms around relationships and intimacy. As AI companions become more sophisticated, they offer an alternative form of interaction that could alleviate loneliness, especially among those who struggle with traditional social settings. Today, platforms like Romance.AI and Replika are at the forefront of this technology, offering everything from simple conversation to complex emotional interactions. The user base is expanding, with surveys showing that one in five Americans have flirted with an AI, driven by curiosity or the need for connection. In conclusion, while the concept of AI partners might seem controversial, the underlying technology is rapidly advancing, promising a future where digital companionship is as commonplace as online dating. As this sector grows, it will be crucial to navigate the ethical and social implications carefully. #AIGirlfriends #VirtualCompanionship #FutureOfDating #AIInnovation #TechTrends

#ai #genai #digital thanks Francesco Burelli for sharing! The World Bank 🌏 Who on Earth Is Using Generative AI?" The paper titled "Who on Earth Is Using Generative AI?" by Yan Liu and He Wang, published by the World Bank, investigates the #global usage patterns of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, leveraging unconventional #data sources like website traffic and #Google Trends. It highlights the rapid adoption of these technologies across various #demographics and #economies, particularly focusing on the factors influencing their uptake and the early impacts on online activities as of March 2024. 🔰 Key Findings Rapid Adoption and Usage: As of March 2024, the top 40 generative AI tools receive nearly 3 billion visits monthly, with ChatGPT alone accounting for 82.5% of this traffic. The user base is predominantly young, educated, and male, particularly for video generation tools, with a strong inclination towards productivity-related activities. 🔰 Global Diffusion: Generative AI has achieved unprecedented global diffusion, reaching 209 out of 218 economies within 16 months of ChatGPT's release. Middle-income economies contribute over 50% of global traffic, while low-income economies account for less than 1%. 🔰 Socioeconomic Factors: Higher income levels, a larger youth population, better digital infrastructure, and stronger human capital correlate with increased generative AI uptake. The study emphasizes the need for targeted #investments in digital #infrastructure and #skills development to maximize the potential of AI technologies. 🔰 User Demographics: The demographic analysis reveals a significant gender gap, with female users underrepresented in generative AI tool usage. ChatGPT has a female user share of only 33%, while video generation tools show even lower participation rates. 🔰 Geographic Disparities: The paper identifies notable geographic disparities in generative AI usage, with middle-income countries showing disproportionately high adoption rates relative to their economic scale. Countries like #India, Brazil, and the Philippines are leading in traffic, while low-income countries lag behind. 🔰 Impact on Online Activities: The introduction of generative AI tools has disrupted online traffic patterns, affecting traditional information and language processing websites. Users increasingly rely on these tools for information acquisition, skill #learning, and #language processing. The findings underscore the transformative potential of generative AI across economies and the importance of understanding its adoption patterns for informed policymaking. The paper calls for further research to address the existing data gaps, particularly in developing countries, and to ensure equitable access to these technologies. This #research contributes to the broader discourse on #technology adoption, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive growth in the AI landscape.

"Leveraging unconventional data, including website traffic data and Google Trends, this paper unveils the real-time usage patterns of generative artificial intelligence tools by individuals across countries. The paper also examines country-level factors driving the uptake and early impacts of generative artificial intelligence on online activities. As of March 2024, the top 40 generative artificial intelligence tools attract nearly 3 billion visits per month from hundreds of millions of users. ChatGPT alone commanded 82.5 percent of the traffic, yet reaching only one-eightieth of Google’s monthly visits. Generative artificial intelligence users skew young, highly educated, and male, particularly for video generation tools, with usage patterns strongly indicating productivity-related activities. Generative artificial intelligence has achieved unprecedentedly rapid global diffusion, reaching almost all economies worldwide within 16 months of ChatGPT’s release. Middle-income economies have disproportionately high adoption of generative artificial intelligence relative to their economic scale, now contribute more than 50 percent of global traffic, while low-income economies contribute less than 1 percent. Regression analysis reveals that income level, share of youth population, digital infrastructure, specialization in high-skill tradable services, English proficiency, and human capital are strongly correlated with higher uptake of generative artificial intelligence. The paper also documents disruptions in online traffic patterns and emphasizes the need for targeted investments in digital infrastructure and skills development to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence." https://lnkd.in/dvfvJnKW #ai #genai #digital

🔊 Big News in the Gen AI World! Bard Becomes Gemini 🤖 Exciting news for everyone interested in cutting-edge Gen AI technology! Today marks the official transition of Bard to Gemini, bringing Google's latest advancements in language models to the world. Few things I liked about the release and Gemini were: 1. Global launch: I still remember the day when one of my friends living in Germany told me to buy ChatGPT premium from United States. Gemini has breaken down that barrier, launching simultaneously worldwide at similar price, showcasing Google's impressive global reach. 2. Competitive pricing: Gemini Advanced arrives at just $19.99, same price as its competitors but with added benefits of Google One Premium, making it a strong contender against its competitors. 3. Superior capabilities: While I personally hold Bard close to my heart, Gemini boasts improved text understanding and overall performance, making it a powerful tool for various tasks. However, I do miss one specific feature from Bard's homepage: those handy prompts! They were a great way to get started and explore the model's capabilities. Perhaps this was removed due to Gemini's improved contextual understanding, making prompts less necessary. Either way, the arrival of Gemini marks a significant step forward in Gen AI development. I'm excited to see what the future holds for this powerful language model and the competition! ✨ #AI #LanguageModels #Gemini #Google #Technology #GlobalLaunch #productmanagement P.S. If you're curious to try Gemini, head over to their website and see for yourself!
