Demers, S. M. (2021). Recreating Collective Memories of Africa in the Afro-Caribbean Diaspora:'Spiritual Resistance in Cuban Santería and Haitian Vodou. Caribbean Quilt, 6(1), 90-96. Abstract: Forced to succumb to a life of enslavement, African-turned-Afro-Caribbean slaves developed a collective image of their beloved homeland. They forged an unbreakable chain of solidarity among their many ethnicities. The collective recreation of Africa as manifest in the imagination of Afro-Caribbean slaves through the practice of Cuban Santería and Haitian Vodou in sixteenth- to eighteenth-century Cuba and Haiti catalyzed their resistance to European subjugation. In particular, these recreated cultural memories served as a foundation for the enslaved to subvert the dominant culture and resist enslavement. Syncretism fails to properly acknowledge the Afro-Caribbean slaves’ efforts in challenging the imperial regime and the role these efforts played in maintaining their African roots. The tumultuous yet hopeful history through which Cuban Santería and Haitian Vodou evolved reveals that the African spirit continuously takes on new forms but never dies.

Globally, peace is the result of collective efforts to reduce inequality, protect human rights, and ensure that all individuals have access to opportunities that promote dignity and growth. Peace thrives where compassion and cooperation replace division and hostility.

Saturday’s Peace Day represents the core aspirations of the United Nations – the pursuit of peace & a world free of violence and strife. This year’s theme focuses on cultivating a culture of peace reminding us all that peace is not merely the absence of conflict, it is also the prevention of conflict. Yet, as we celebrate this important day, many people worldwide continue suffering from conflicts. War is never the answer. We need peace.

It is inspiring to reflect on the pivotal role Rotary International played in shaping the United Nations’ first General Assembly, as well as in laying the groundwork for principles that would guide global diplomacy, peace, and unity. On this historic day, January 10, 1946, Rotary’s steadfast commitment to fostering peace and cooperation resonated deeply with the vision of the U.N., and continues to echo in the organization’s work today. Rotary’s enduring impact in global peacebuilding is a testament to the power of collective action and the far-reaching influence of community-driven organizations. Its work in promoting peace and unity aligns seamlessly with the core values that have driven transformative change across societies. By facilitating dialogues, promoting mutual understanding, and supporting global initiatives, Rotary exemplifies how local efforts can shape global realities. As we honor this legacy, let us reaffirm our shared responsibility to build a more peaceful and just world. Rotary’s peace initiatives continue to inspire individuals and communities to act in ways that foster understanding, resilience, and global solidarity. It is through such initiatives that we can collectively pave the way for a harmonious future, grounded in cooperation, respect, and shared human dignity.
