How can you tell if a fashion brand's claim to sustainability is legitimate? Unfortunately, it's almost impossible. Fast fashion is not only unsustainable, but brands greenwash their products to promote buying one product over another, instead of the better alternative of slowing consumption. False claims create moral-based obligations on consumers to make some purchases over others, overshadowing the value of reuse, reduce, and recycling, which would truly change the environmental and labour scope of fast fashion. Now, picture silence, factories shuttered, dreams unraveled. This was Cardigan, Wales, in 2002, after its denim industry bled overseas. But a different thread emerged against the tide of globalization: Hiut Denim. 👖 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸: 𝗥𝗲𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗲 🔥 David and Clare Hieatt, seasoned entrepreneurs, felt the void. They saw empty buildings and the skills and spirit of generations woven into the town's DNA. Hiut Denim was born in 2012, driven by a mission: revive Cardigan's denim legacy, stitch by stitch. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗺: 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 💪 Hiut defied the fast-fashion frenzy. They embraced slow craft, using raw selvage denim and traditional techniques. Each pair, lovingly hand-stitched by Cardigan's former factory workers, became a story of resilience. They hosted the "Camp Out" conference in a literal sheep shed, attracting loyal customers and influencers by creating genuine experiences. Their social impact initiatives, like making scrubs for frontline workers during the pandemic, further cemented their connection with the community. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀: 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 🧵 Hiut Denim defied the odds. They carved a niche in the crowded jeans market, gaining recognition from international publications and celebrities. Their story resonated, attracting customers who valued ethical production, quality craftsmanship, and a brand with a beating heart. 𝗟𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱: 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗝𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗝𝗲𝗮𝗻𝘀 🎓 Hiut's success is a testament to the power of human connection, purpose-driven business, and community. Thanks for sharing this Mightly. I think the issue has many layers, but in reality, if we were to source sustainable fabrics, pay ethical wages, and then price clothing accordingly we would all need to make different decisions about how we use our clothing. We see scary data about how more clothing is being produced every year and worn fewer and fewer times. We all have work to do from the consumer side and the brand side to make more mindful decisions about the future of fashion.

Anyone else focusing in on conscious consumption this September? It started with Oxfam alerting the world to the sheer amount of #fastfashion that lands in landfill with their national #secondhandseptember campaign. September marks a seasonal change in the calendar. Wardrobes are turned over from S/S to A/W and fashion weeks across the world make headlines. You could argue that buying nothing is the most conscious thing to do, but then there is the negative impact that that has on the economy - creative economy, retail economy, local manufacturing economy and local economies. If you buy from local brands designed, brands who have purpose written into their business DNA and secondhand retailers which support the fundraising efforts of important charities, then surely the offset is worth it. #secondhandseptember #consciousconsumption #slowfashion
