#WeAreCitizens: Meet Archit, one of our IT Junior Associates in the Data Engineering and Analytics department. Archit creates interactive and innovative PowerBI reports, works to improve and expedite outdated Guidewire queries, and explores PowerApps. Archit discovered Citizens at a career fair hosted at Florida State University. "I was inspired by the purpose of Citizens' work," he shared. "It was then that I asked if there were any openings. The Citizens team contacted me, and I eagerly agreed to participate in the recruitment process. I am fortunate to join this organization as an IT intern." He also values Citizens' corporate culture of continuous learning and growth. "Personally, I greatly appreciate an environment where we have the liberty to ask questions freely and even more so when there are abundant individuals available to respond to our inquiries and share their knowledge with us." So far, Archit's favorite experience has been the IT Potluck. He said it brings different teams together with similar experiences, positively impacting interns' mindsets. Archit is looking forward to the IT Town Hall for the opportunity to interact with more people and gain insights into the future of IT here at Citizens. A lot of people seem to despise the truth behind the saying “it’s not what you know, but who you know.” There are a lot of people who find jobs without playing the LinkedIn dating game, where connecting often feels contrived, and you’re forced to determine very quickly whether or not somebody is worth future interaction, that or you feel obligated to show your worthiness somehow in the span of a minute or sixty words. Suppose we can break it down to something extremely simple: not all people need a special referral to get a job, but many people who do get jobs do so because they knew somebody special. Special, unique. You get the point. Here are several “who you know” examples that have benefitted me in my career: - a past girlfriend introduced me to a Facebook page for brand ambassadors. I would go on to work at concerts, on food trucks, sell protein bars, alcohol and more. This led to an opportunity where I could sell computers as I strived to carve my way into the tech industry. - a past boss referred me to an intern role that led to me getting my first official tech role. I earned more than my prior job by 25%. I got to meet new people and learn new things. I even got to fix a 3D printer. - a now deceased friend who I met from a writer’s group paid me to redesign his insurance website and blog. R.I.P. Joe! - a past college classmate bumped into me on the train. I mentioned my aforementioned internship coming to an end. He connected me to his coworker at Robert Half who landed me my first help desk IT contract, which led to a direct hire. - my group mate from the coding bootcamp referred me to her recruiter, and two weeks later I landed my first official role as a web developer. Guess what! All those people helped me in the past, would gladly help me again, but unfortunately neither of them can snap their fingers to make something happy for me right now. Here are some more recent networking examples that haven’t landed me jobs, but have brought value to my life if even from good intention: - met an executive recruiter on the staircase as I left a job fair and they were arriving. Still sends me jobs to consider. - met various engineers through posting and engaging. After a while I inquired about coffee chats, but rarely do I ask cold and out of the blue. I usually build rapport first. I have received advice from this, insights, good chats and even the occasional recommendation. - met very few likeminded professionals on Twitter and preferred to bring the convos here where the cesspool is slightly smaller than it is on X (less NFT bots and more resume writing bots). You can apply 1 time and get the job. You can apply 1000 times and rarely get more than the “Unfortunately we have …” emails. Especially for those without Bachelors degrees (so I’m thinking bootcamp grads for instance), now is a difficult time to get your foot in the door and stand out. Standing out with individuals is easier than with your resume alone!

Intern season is here which means it's time for outreaches/coffee chats. Some general advice: - Don't be afraid to reach out: You get ~3 months of the intern card and people are more willing to help than you think - Be curious: Come prepped with questions + ready to ask follow ups - Research: Spend 5 minutes on the person's LinkedIn profile and note things that stood out to you + any commonalities to talk about during call - Take notes: You never know what you're going to learn and what might be useful later - Once selected find a mentor and do your best to impress ~ this usually will land you a full time job #intern #sysgain #data #IT #salesforce #BI #opentochat

Data Scientist @Spotify • I show you how I went from hundreds of job rejections to landing my dream job in Tech so that you can do it too👇🏻
3 years ago, I applied for an extremely competitive Data Science internship and I got rejected. But I still got the internship and I’m gonna show you how you can do it too👇 But first, understand there’s a formula to get a job: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 = (𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 + 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲) * 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 Most people don’t know that applying alone will get you NOWHERE because the market conditions factor is stronger than ever today. And it’s due to this: 🐣 𝐶𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑚𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑖𝑡𝑦 – Most companies are not even at the stage where they need a Data Scientist 👥 𝑂𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑢𝑝𝑝𝑙𝑦 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑎𝑡𝑎 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑡𝑠 – The job market has become oversaturated 💰 𝐿𝑜𝑤 ℎ𝑒𝑎𝑑𝑐𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑖𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑛𝑖𝑒𝑠 – Many companies have shifted their priorities (Profitability > Growth), which means hiring budgets get sacked You got it. The job market is fierce, extremely competitive, and not always fair. Fine, so what are we supposed to do now? Sit and cry? ❌ NO! What most people also forget is that there is an extra element in that formula that counterattacks the market conditions factor: 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 = [(𝗦𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 + 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲) * 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀] *🔥 𝗡𝗘𝗧𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗞𝗜𝗡𝗚 🔥 When I got rejected, I put my LinkedIn networking skills to work: ↳ I attended the job fair at my school and connected with the main speaker from that company ↳ I applied to the internship and reached out to the guy to express my motivation ↳ He was kind but he still sent me flying and redirected me to the HR, but I stayed in touch ↳ I got rejected from the internship, alongside all my class. I cried a bit ↳ The guy contacted me a few weeks later telling me they were still looking for an intern. He asked me to send him my application ↳ I got contacted by HR and two days later I got the internship offer What happened is that I NETWORKED from the very start. But networking is DIFFICULT. I know it because people reach out to me all the time and some do it so badly, that I don't even respond. No one is born with this skill. But it’s crucial you learn it! I did through trial and error. But most importantly I learned from the best when I was at NYU and X-HEC. And I wrote a whole article to teach you how for FREE. In 2016, 70% of people were hired at a company where they already connected with someone in it. This means 2 things for you: ↳ You might not go too far in your career if you don’t pull your social strings. ↳ If you don’t, be sure that others will, and they’ll leave you with crumbles. You choose. —— Btw, I’ve been sharing my top Medium articles from Towards Data Science on LinkedIn since last week. Today is day #6! 👋 New here? I'm Khouloud. I help data scientists land their first tech jobs and share insights through my weekly newsletter, all from my experiences as a data scientist at Spotify (all links in the comment!)
