Post 1: 3rd Week of Internship at 132kv Grid, IESCO Exploring Advanced Protection Mechanisms This week marked the end of my third week at the 132kV Grid IESCO, and it was all about diving deep into the world of relays, the unsung heroes of electrical protection systems. I had the opportunity to learn about: 🔹 Transmission Line Control Relays: 1|| Overcurrent Relay 2|| Distance Relay 🔹 Control Power Transformer Relays: 1|| Differential Relay 2|| Buchholz Relay 3|| Overcurrent Relay Each relay type plays a critical role in maintaining the reliability and safety of our electrical grid. What is Differential Relay? A differential relay is a protective device that detects faults within equipment, such as transformers or generators, by comparing the current entering and exiting the protected zone. Under normal conditions, these currents are equal. If there's a difference, indicating a fault, the relay trips to isolate the faulty section, ensuring rapid detection and minimization of damage. What is Buchholz Relay? A Buchholz relay is a gas-actuated protection device used in oil-filled transformers, installed in the pipeline connecting the transformer's main tank to the conservator. It detects gas accumulation or oil movement caused by internal faults like short circuits or insulation failures. Upon detection, the relay triggers an alarm or trips the transformer to prevent severe damage, providing early detection and response to minor faults. What is Distance Relay? A distance relay, or impedance relay, protects transmission lines by measuring the impedance between the relay location and the fault point. It trips when impedance falls below a set value, indicating a fault in a specific zone. This relay provides selective, reliable protection, isolating only the faulted section and minimizing network disruption. Understanding these mechanisms not only broadens my technical knowledge but also underscores the importance of precision and responsiveness in power system protection. Summer has arrived and newbies are joining your projects. Go back in time and recall your first days in construction. The jobsite looks and sounds chaotic. The jargon used on site sounds like a foreign language. Here is a recent quote from a young field engineer - "As a novice in the industry, I felt an overall uncertainty about all the details. I had to learn on the fly - leaving me quietly Googling terms or asking embarrassing questions to my superintendent." We're asking new interns and engineers to navigate a complex construction environment while also performing important tasks. As the semester break coming to a close, I would like to reflect on my 2-months internship journey at Fugro Technical Services Limited. Throughout this internship, I engaged in indoor air quality monitoring tasks across ten different sites, using various equipment. These tasks went beyond routine exercises while immersing me in environmental assessments. I have sharpened my technical proficiency and dived deep into the standards rating building such as IAQ, LEED and IEQ. The hands-on experiences complemented the theoretical knowledge from textbooks. In addition, I encountered challenges deriving from environmental variables and equipment limitations. Environmental variables often introduced uncertainties influcing data accuracy, while equipment errors sometimes disrupted measurement schedules. However, under experienced guidance, I adapted by employing alternative strategies, alongside clear communication with clients. These challenges not only bolstered my problem-solving and communication skills but also enhanced my resilience in adversity. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to craft three comprehensive environmental monitoring and audit reports following detailed inspections. Aligning the provided photos with the specified criteria posed a significant challenge due to the limited number and angles of available images. To address this, we conducted on-site visits to ensure compliance with standards and to capture relevant photos emerged as the most effective solution. Securing the Construction Industry Safety Training Certificate granted me the invaluable chance to accompany my team on-site, necessitating keen observation skills and adaptability. Collaborating with on-site personnel to overcome logistical constraints and capture requisite images further strengthened my problem-solving skills in challenging situations. Big thanks to the collaborative work environment at Fugro where colleagues readily offered guidance and answered queries. Both my supervisor and colleagues encouraged me to explore diverse environmental monitoring practices beyond my designated tasks, such as carbon audits and light simulation. These knowledge exchanges not only broadened my technical learning but also highlighted the value of learning from seasoned industry professionals, whose journeys inspired my future career aspirations. In conclusion, my internship at Fugro has equipped me with enhanced technical knowledge in environmental monitoring, coupled with practical skills and a widened perspective on potential career pathways. Overcoming the challenges in this field has not only strengthened my problem-solving abilities and adaptability but also planted in me a belief in the transferability of these skills to diverse industries. Building the Future of 5G: Key takeaway on My Internship at Best Group Construction As a Student Site Engineer at Best Group Construction, I had the incredible opportunity to contribute to the construction of ground-based stations for Netone and Huawei technologies, specifically focusing on those capable of utilizing cutting-edge 5G technology. This internship has been an invaluable experience, allowing me to gain hands-on experience, develop my engineering skills, and contribute to the advancement of telecommunications infrastructure. Building for the Future of Connectivity: One of the most exciting aspects of my internship was working on the construction of a 5G-ready ground-based station in Harare. This project involved collaborating with experienced engineers and technicians to lay the foundation, erect the tower, install state-of-the-art equipment, and ensure everything met the highest standards. Witnessing this station come to life and knowing it would play a crucial role in bringing 5G technology to the city was truly inspiring. Repurposing Infrastructure for 5G: Another highlight was the project where we repurposed an existing tower light in Dzivarasekwa (Wireless_N0018_Dzivarasekwa_Cres_TL) into a 5G booster. This involved adapting the existing structure to accommodate new equipment and ensuring it met the stringent requirements for 5G technology. It was fascinating to see how we could transform existing infrastructure into a valuable asset for the 5G rollout, demonstrating our commitment to innovation and resourcefulness. Construction Challenges and Solutions: *Construction Safety with Real-time Phone App: Maintaining a safe working environment was paramount throughout the internship. We implemented a real-time phone app that tracked worker safety, including reporting hazards, near misses, and compliance with safety protocols. This app provided valuable data and insights, allowing us to proactively address potential safety risks and ensure the well-being of our team. Collaboration and Learning: Throughout my internship, I had the privilege of working with a diverse team of professionals, from engineers and project managers to technicians and construction workers. This collaborative environment fostered a strong sense of teamwork and allowed me to learn from their vast experience and expertise. I gained invaluable insights into the complexities of project management, construction techniques, and the importance of effective communication. Looking Ahead: This internship has solidified my passion for civil engineering and the crucial role it plays in shaping our world. Within Kropman internships are thoroughly considered as a professional learning experience that offers meaningful, practical work related to a student's field of study or career interest. Kazuaki Hatano, a DWR intern is nearing his completion of his internship and has a few words to share of his internship experience! "First of all, I wanted to thank Samantha Blackwood for the opportunity at DWR. I have certainly learned a lot about what the engineers do at the Department of Water Resources. Since I am an engineer major, it has really helped doing this internship. Simple things such as reading engineering maps, what the road to an engineer looks like, and understanding how meetings are held were just a few of the things that I have learned that really helps me stay motivated for continuing with my education in engineering.   A lot of this program is more of what you want to get out of it. I always came in the office at least once a week to ask specific questions that gets me a better understanding of what an engineer does. It really helps with my future because not only is this good experience as a first-year student, but it also can really bolster my resume for the next school year. I also have learned a lot about the Delta Conveyance Project and some of the future opportunities that I can find further down the line."
