I have been catching up a lot with people lately--former employees and colleagues, many of whom are more successful than I'll ever be—and a consistent theme that comes after an "A-ha!" moment is, essentially, "do you know how to tell a story with a P&L?" Now, it's true that Excel has told more lies than Word will ever dream of, but that's not what I'm getting at. It's this: "Can you articulate the desire/pain/gap/opportunity you see for the product/org/market in terms of P&L structure?" Often the answer is, "I hadn't thought of it that way." I'll give two examples: "Why don't we have more product/ux people?" Well, if you're a B2G/B2B vertical-market SaaS company who can be profitable at $10-20M, what percentage of your spend should go to product/ux people? If your R&D spend is 15% or even 20% of ARR, then you need to be able to run a team on $1.5M to $4M budget. At the lower end of that, how many people can you hire for Product Manager, Product Owner, UX Designer, UX researcher, and Front End Developer? Answer: Not many! Can your VP Engineering or CTO (or even, as CEO, you) tell your market story end-to-end? As a CEO/CTO telling your board what kinds of growth you can sustain and how much investment you need, how well can you articulate the relationship between R&D Spend (velocity to PMF), GtM spend (essentially, activity-based costing en route to meaningfully-calculated CAC), and whether you should be out raising money or closing deals? My old buddy David Hussman used to say to me, "The best software developers are software storytellers." How many of you know how to tell a software story at the P&L/Cap Table level? How many of you wish you were better at it? If you know how or learned the hard way, how did you learn?

This is an exciting opportunity to guide major projects that help the Tribune evolve alongside the nonprofit news ecosystem. This role is housed in the Tribune’s product department, reporting to the chief product officer. The product department is the glue between editorial, technology, and business units, encompassing design, engineering, and analytics teams. This is not a project manager position, although good project management is essential for this role. It is a technical role — while the engineering team determines how to build a solution, the product manager determines what to build and why. They are the organization’s chief facilitator and help multiply our impact, collaborating with others to further long-term initiatives that improve our core products, tools, and organizational processes. We will count on this role to lead and communicate initiatives regarding product definition, idea generation, analytics, and user experience across the staff. As the sole PM for the news organization, this person should be excellent at prioritization, working to determine the most high-impact work across our website, membership program, newsletter portfolio, AI initiatives and internal workflows, among other initiatives.  The salary for this position starts at $80,000 and depends on qualifications. It's amazing to me how many hiring teams throw around the phrase "Design, Implement, and Support" without having any idea what those three words mean. This might be the most overused buzz phrase in all of Tech. If only there were a way for hiring teams to educate themselves on the differences that exist between these methodologies, frameworks, and approaches... Navigating the R&D organizational structure is pivotal for every company. Should we align engineering with code ownership (front end vs. back-end or modules) or base it on product feature ownership (e.g. user onboarding)? It's a delicate balance. The former ensures specialized issue resolution but slows down feature releases, while the latter accelerates shipping but risks redundancy.
