There Goes My Hero (TGMH) is a grassroots nonprofit organization based in Baltimore. Our mission is to, “Save Lives. Provide Hope. Help those Impacted by Blood Cancers.” The organization was founded in 2009 with the goal of supporting leukemia patients and their families after our co-founder (and my long-time friend) Erik Sauer’s own battle with blood cancer. Erik’s life was saved because of the generosity of one individual. His vision and our mission is to add life-saving donors to the bone marrow registry. We support blood cancer patients and families by covering the unanticipated costs of treatment, including meals during treatment, medically tailored meals post-discharge, parking, transportation, and copays. My goal is to raise $3000 in support of helping those impacted by blood cancers. That’s 120 generous people donating $25. Our Impact: · Bone Marrow Registry: We have added over 23,000 people to the registry. Out of these, 709 have been potential matches and over 65 have gone on to life-saving transplants · Meals Funded: Nearly 156,000 meals have been provided to patients and their families in need. · Hero Fund: This newly established fund supports Baltimore area blood cancer patients and their families by covering unanticipated treatment costs, including meals during treatment, medically tailored meals post-discharge, transportation, parking, and copays. · Color the Registry Initiative: This initiative aims to diversify the bone marrow donor registry to better reflect U.S. demographics, ensuring that every patient, regardless of ethnic or racial background, has hope for a bone marrow transplant.
