"I got 5 Summer Analyst investment banking offers!" "Which one do I pick?" First of all, congratulations! So much hard work is required to get these offers. Next step - Making a well-informed decision: 1. What questions do you need answered to get comfortable accepting? For example: -> Deal pipeline -> Type of technical experience (always pitching or signing deals?) -> Staffing (have a specific summer staffer?) -> Senior leader exposure -> Company (and team specific) reputation -> Analyst Training Program 2. Have you spoken to former Analysts about their experience? (not just currently working at firm?) Did they have a great or mediocre experience? 3. How have your interactions with employees at each of the firms been? Do they interact with each other well or competitively? Would you want to work with them? 4. TRUST YOUR GUT Just like picking the college of your dreams, picking an internship requires you to: ☑ Get as much information you can AND ☑ Trust your feelings 🎉 And once you make the decision, be happy and relieved. You’ve made a great career decision for you!

I won’t be able to compete with these students for investment banking jobs. They are taking leaves of absence from school to complete multiple internships. One student is planning to do nine to ten internships before graduating! If you are a student who can secure only two internships, does it mean you are out? No, you still have a good chance, the number of internships isn’t what hiring managers consider. 1. I look for the ability to learn new skills quickly. You can demonstrate this by showing you have acquired knowledge outside of your schoolwork. For example, create and edit videos of ten finance professionals offering career advice or talking about different parts of banking. 2. The ability to work in a team is crucial, but merely telling me about how you collaborate with friends on school projects may not suffice. I am more interested in how you handle working with difficult teammates, such as free-riders and egoistic people. 3. Communication skills are essential—can you effectively interact with senior and experienced professionals? Investment banks typically engage with company owners, CEOs, and CFOs. While you won’t be presenting solutions to them at the start of your career, you may be asked to pick them up from hotels or show them around. I suggest inviting finance professionals to your school to give talks. In this way, you demonstrated your communication skills is good enough in convincing working professionals to share their experience. While it is not easy to get into investment banking, the good news, according to LinkedIn’s chief editor, Daniel Roth, is that there was a “26% increase in entry-level hiring for investment banking analysts last year. Deals are back! And the banks need people.” Don’t worry if you cannot get into investment banking right after graduation. You can pursue something related to banking first and try IB again after a few years. Good luck! cc: Kwan Wei Kevin Tan from Business Insider who wrote this article on "Meet the students stacking internships and battling each other to get a foot in Goldman Sachs' and JPMorgan's doors" link to his article: https://lnkd.in/dQfPTf_z #investmentbanking
